Beaks, books at Burtonsville, White Oak libraries
Volunteers from 4-H will visit area libraries to share a book, songs, crafts and information about the county fair. Kids can also have an opportunity to see a farm animal (a chicken) and learn about what goes into caring for farm animals. The program will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Marilyn J. Praisner Library, 14910 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville and 10:30 a.m. July 29 at the White Oak Library, 11701 New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring. Habitat for Humanity celebrates first interfaith house
The Lutheran Church of St. Andrew is hosting an ice cream social and talent show to celebrate the kickoff of Habitat for Humanity's first interfaith house in Montgomery County. For the first time in the county's history, local congregations will be coming together to help fund the rehabilitation of a vacant, foreclosed home in Silver Spring. Teams of 10 will volunteer every Friday and Saturday starting this Saturday through September to fix up the home. The house will then be sold to a low-income family. Saturday's event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at St. Andrew's, 15300 New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring. "Senior Mediation" film
to air in Takoma Park
Join the city of Takoma Park and the Conflict Resolution Center of Montgomery County from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Takoma Park Community Center auditorium, 7500 Maple Ave., for a screening of the new awareness film entitled "Senior Mediation" shot by Takoma Park's cable TV staff and emergency preparedness volunteers.
The film explores the difficulties of a young family in determining care plans for an aging matriarch and stars Anne Gordon, Tim Stranges, Carolyn Stilwell, Peggy Mitchell, Agnetha Hansgardh, Alicia Pfund and Edward Ketchen. Filming was funded by the Takoma Foundation nonprofit community grant program and will hold a second screening in the auditorium beginning at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
A reception including catering by the new Takoma Park business, Capital City Cheesecake, will follow the premiere screening Thursday and a light lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. before the event Friday.

Children to help those in Africa through talent show, supply drive
Racines Heritage Foundation, a Kensington-based nonprofit dedicated to benefitting children in Africa, will hold Talent-ED, it first annual competition showcasing talent in the performing arts for children ages 7 to 14. The event will be held 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 24 at the Hilton Hotel, 8727 Colesville Road in Silver Spring.
Proceeds from the event and other financial contributions will help to benefit girl's education in Africa. This year's beneficiaries include both the Girl Child Network Worldwide and CERCADO orphanage in Cote d'Ivoire. Girl Child Network was established to combat sexual abuse against girls and provide them with education and financial resources. The CERCADO orphanage houses children who were war victims of the 2002 social conflicts in Cote d'Ivoire.
Racines Heritage will hold a school supplies drive July 24 to collect books, pens, backpacks, teaching and learning materials, and computers. Sixty percent of the proceeds will be allocated to the Girl Child Network Worldwide and CERCADO will receive 40 percent of the proceeds as well as all donated school supplies.

AARP senior driver class
in Silver Spring
Senior drivers interested in brushing up on the rules of the road can attend a single four-hour class Saturday and receive a completion certificate from AARP. The cost of the class is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-AARP members. The instructor will collect the fee on the day of the class, which will be held at the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center, 3300 Briggs Chaney Road in Silver Spring. Senior volunteer drivers needed
The Senior Connection urgently needs Montgomery County residents to volunteer to help their neighbors 62 and older live as independently as possible by providing escorted transportation to scheduled medical appointments, helping with grocery shopping and running errands and paying a friendly visit or making a phone call to share companionship.
The time commitment and schedule are flexible and volunteers are provided with life-skills training and recognition events. The Senior Connection also provides volunteer liability insurance coverage.
