Striders excel at region meetNine members of the Southern Maryland Striders Track & Field Club qualified for the AAU Junior Olympic Games by recording top-four finishes at the Region 2A Championships in Philadelphia, June 26-27. The Junior Olympic meet is scheduled for July 27-Aug. 2 in Detroit. In the Bantam Girls (10-year-old) division, Kendra Bullock, Alyssa Lednum, Aziah Pless and Lauryn Scriber took fourth in the 400-meter relay (1 minute, 3.37 seconds). Lednum, Pless, Scriber and Bullock took third in the 1,600 relay (5:04.26). In the Bantam Boys division, Kelvin Jordan Jr. took second place in the shot put (20 feet, 3 inches). In the Sub-Youth Girls division (13-years old), Cierra Butler qualified in two events, taking second in the 200 (27.79 seconds) and third in the 100 (13.47). Briauna Kilgore won the 200 hurdles with a time of 31.85 seconds. She also narrowly missed qualifying in the 100, taking fifth place. The 400 relay team of Jade Woodbridge, Kilgore, Butler and Jocelyn Mills took second place (52.49). Woodbridge also qualified individually in the long jump in the Youth Girls division, taking third place (16 feet, 9.25 inches). She also took fifth in the 100. Naim Muhammad finished fifth in the 100 in the Primary Boys division (8-and-under). He also was 11th in the 200 and 12th in the 400. Zion Alexander was 11th in the 400 and 14th in the 200 in the Bantam Boys division, and Michael Bunn was 12th in the 800. Myles Hunt took 11th in the 800, 12th in the 400 and 13th in the 200 in the Midget Boys division (12-year olds). KaDazya Stevenson was 12th in the 200 and 13th in the 100 in the Intermediate Girls division (16-year olds). U-15 Clinton teamwins county title The Clinton U-15 baseball team (10-1) won the inaugural county Babe Ruth League championship against College Park, 19-12, on July 3. Clinton starting pitcher Andrew Byrd (Henry A. Wise High School) allowed just three runs, as his offense spotted him to a 17-3 lead heading into the fourth inning when College Park rallied for nine runs. Na’im Crawford (Suitland High) relived Byrd and tossed 2-2⁄3 innings of shutout ball the rest of the way. William Johnson (Largo High) tripled, doubled and singled and scored five runs for Clinton. Lonzo Cook (Surrattsville High) reached base four times and scored four runs. Kenny Ameker (Suitland High) and Robert Dawkins each had four runs batted in. Byrd and Crawford helped their causes by combining for seven RBI. Area U-10 teamsplaying in Nationals Six of the top U-10 boys’ basketball teams in the region headed to New Orleans this week to play in the AAU National Tournament. The event runs through Tuesday with 60 teams participating. The D.C. Assault headed into the Nationals after winning the Potomac Valley Region title, and the team is looking to take one step further after finishing as the runner up in last year’s U-9 Nationals. D.C. Assault-Gorham, a first-year team, also qualified for the Nationals after finishing second in the region, and the Maryland Bulls enter the Nationals as the No. 3 team in the Potomac Valley Region. D.C. Triple Threat, which took second in the U-9 National Classic Division last year, the Fairfax Stars Gold and the Virginia Cardinals also are representing the Potomac Valley Region in the Nationals. Sharks fall to Adelphi The Fort Washington Sharks (0-3) gave way to Adelphi Recreation in the individual medley events Saturday en route to a 277.5-254.5 loss in Prince-Mont Swim League Division C action. Ryan Bonomo and Mason Hill won the U-8 boys’ breaststroke and backstroke, respectively, for the Sharks. Brian Wynn was second in the freestyle and third in the back ahead of teammate David King. Madison Tompkins was runner-up in the girls’ U-8 breast and free while setting personal marks. Raiven Vanzego was third in the girls’ back. Don Brazelton was a triple winner in the 9-10 boys’ butterfly, free and back. Jared Saunders won the breast. Alexander Plansky was second in the free. Ten-year-old Michael Balazek took third in the 11-12 back and IM. Kiara Leath was a double winner in the 9-10 girls’ breast and back and also was third in the fly.
