Bowie Volunteer Fire Department wins state award
In what seems like an annual award, the Bowie Volunteer Fire Department was awarded a Maryland State Firemen's Association Certificate of Recognition for Fire Prevention and Life Safety at the association's convention in Ocean City during the week of June 13.
This honor was bestowed in the single project category for outstanding open house activities.
Animal welfare group set to meet Tuesday
The Bowie Citizens for Local Animal Welfare plans to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bowie Community Center, 3209 Stoneybrook Drive. On the agenda is a discussion of future events. All interested individuals are welcome.
The group was recently presented with a $300 donation from the Samuel Ogle Middle School National Junior Honor Society.
Bowie High grad completes Navy basic training
Navy Seaman Apprentice Kyle P. Baker, who graduated from Bowie High School in 2008, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is the son of Tracy L. Barwick of Bowie.
During the eight-week training, Baker participated in classroom study as well as physical fitness and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.
He also participated in Battle Stations, an exercise designed to foster characteristics of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance through the application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment.
"Its distinctly Navy' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor," according to a Navy news release.
DeMatha grad makes dean's list at University of Delaware
Bowie resident Michael E. Milburn II made the dean's list for the fall semester 2009 and spring semester 2010 at the University of Delaware in Newark, Del.
A rising sophomore at Delaware, he is a wide receiver on the Fightin' Blue Hens' football team with an overall GPA of 3.6. He is also a graduate of DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville.
Bowie lawyer honored for pro bono work
Bowie lawyer John David Gabel of Gabel Legal Services, LLC was recently named one of the 2010 winners of the Maryland Pro Bono Service Awards by the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland, based in Baltimore.
The statewide awards honor attorneys, law firms and others who have significantly contributed to the delivery of free civil legal services to Maryland's low-income population.
Part of Gabel's practice includes work on environmental matters. He is also a member of the city's Environmental Advisory Committee.
Two area students graduate from College of Notre Dame
Bowie area residents Kate Ngozi Ogbuehi and Patricia Ann Scalise were among more than 700 students who were awarded degrees at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland's 115th commencement on May 22 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
Ogbuehi received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, and Scalise received a Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal studies/elementary education.
Mitchellville student named to New Hampshire dean's list
Justine Elliott of Mitchellville has been named to the dean's list for the 2010 spring semester at the University of New Hampshire. Students on the list are recognized for their superior scholastic performance.
Bowie-area students make dean's list at Virginia Tech
Three area students enrolled at Virginia Tech were named to the dean's list for the spring 2010 semester at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
They include John L. Pagliaro of Bowie, a senior majoring in engineering science and mechanics in the College of Engineering; Elaine E. Huffman of Bowie, a senior majoring in civil engineering in the College of Engineering; and Jazmin T. Doss of Mitchellville, a junior majoring in electrical engineering in the College of Engineering.
To qualify for the dean's list, students must attempt at least 12 credit hours graded on the A-F option and earn a 3.4 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester.
Bowie-area student named to Clarion University dean's list
Alexander Taylor of the Bowie area has been named to the dean's list at Clarion University in Clarion, Pa., for the second semester of the 2009-10 academic year. Dean's list students must have earned a 3.5 quality point average or higher (on a 4.0 scale) during the semester.
Jazz festival coming to Mitchellville
The Lake Arbor Jazz Promotions Group is hosting a jazz festival from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Lake Arbor Community Center at 10100 Lake Arbor Way in Mitchellville.
The festival will feature local and regional jazz and R&B musicians from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, including Phaze II, Freddie Dunn of The Freddie Dunn Project, Keith Killgo with Donald Byrd and the Blackbyrds and Spur of the Moment.
There will be food and merchandise vendors. The festival is free and open to the public.

County students could trade essays for baseball tickets
Prince George's County Councilwoman Ingrid Turner (D-Dist. 4) of Bowie is sponsoring an essay contest for students in grades three to eight who live in council District 4 to qualify to win tickets to a Washington Nationals baseball clinic and game.
The essay, entitled "Why is baseball your favorite pastime?", must include a registration form with the student's name, address, telephone number, name of group or school and name of parent or guardian. Essays are due by July 19. The contest is free to enter.
All participants will receive a certificate of participation. The first 50 students to submit essays will receive a Washington Nationals baseball hat.
The five contest winners will be notified by letter and must be accompanied to the Aug. 14 clinic and game by a friend, parent or guardian. The contest is open to Prince George's County public and private school students.

Lawmaker hosting foreclosure prevention workshop
U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Dist. 4) of Fort Washington is holding a foreclosure prevention workshop and forum from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Largo High School at 505 Largo Road in Largo.
Residents should bring all paperwork related to current and former mortgages, including loan applications, settlement paperwork, lender statements and default notices, a monthly household budget, foreclosure notices and any threats of foreclosure.
Residents should also talk to a housing counselor for a level-one intake session before seeing an attorney.

Glenn Dale school's students travel to Walt Disney World
More than 60 students from Holy Trinity Episcopal Day School in Glenn Dale attended the annual Disney Youth Education Series Program, "The American Story," May 20 at Walt Disney World in Orlando.
The program allows the thousands of students who participate each year the chance to apply what they learn in the classroom to real life, said Christine DeMichael, the marketing manager for Disney Youth Programs. Areas of study include the arts and humanities, physical and natural science and leadership and careers.
The students, who toured the Magic Kingdom Park, learned about history from the late 1700s, the presidents, the American Revolution and the liberty bell, among other things, said Laykin Zarro, the school's director of marketing and communications.
