Students bring Shakespeare to film
Eight Chevy Chase Elementary School students were honored with a showing of their film adaptation of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" at the American Film Institute in Silver Spring on June 4. The students, fourth-graders Grace Wagner, Sean Silva, Alex Restifo, Sophia Liu, Megan Blaine and Vikram Akwei, and fifth-graders Spencer Greene and Fiona Selmi worked with producer Mark Ricche of IMPERIAL Theatrical Production Services PRESENTS to create their 16-minute film. They also had an opportunity to discuss their work with students from Seneca Academy in Darnestown after the AFI showing.
Landon students named
National Merit Scholars
Landon seniors Henry Zhu of Chevy Chase and Jack Strabo of Arlington, Va., have been named National Merit Scholars and each will receive a $2,500 college scholarship from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Zhu also has been named one of 141 U.S. Presidential Scholars. He plans to attend Stanford University.
Landon Student Council President Kai Kight of Washington, D.C., has been named a National Achievement Scholar, which recognizes outstanding achievement among black high school students.
Kight has also been named a Coca-Cola Scholar. He is one of 53 high school seniors chosen by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation for demonstrating excellence in academics and civic leadership in extracurricular activities and the community. The honor comes with a $20,000 scholarship.
Kight, who is concertmaster for the D.C. Youth Orchestra, will attend Stanford in the fall.
Twelve students from the class of 2011 have been named Commended Scholars and will move on in the National Merit Scholar competition next year. They are: John Donelan, Jack Falvey, Brandon Gleklen and Alex Selowsky of Bethesda; Greg Russell of Chevy Chase; James Craig of Kensington; Alex Becker, Michael Henochowitz and Sean Stouffer of Potomac; Freddy Holcomb and Devin Jones of McLean, Va.; and Julian Heller of Washington, D.C.
Stone Ridge student honored
Kathryn Suarez of Chevy Chase, a senior at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, is one of the first recipients of the Hesburgh-Yusko Scholarship from the University of Notre Dame. The scholarship is a comprehensive, merit-based program planned to cultivate visionary leaders in the image of the Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, the former president of the University of Notre Dame, an educator and advocate of social justice. Suarez is one of 25 students nationwide selected for the scholarship.

Bannockburn history in art
Bannockburn Elementary School in Bethesda announces the completion of a permanent fabric triptych titled, Bannockburn Portrait: The Art that Makes a School. The triptych was fabricated by fourth-graders working with resident artist Bonnie Lee Holland and art teacher Limor Dekel. Images in representing the school and community of Bannockburn today and its agrarian and golf course past were created, painted on canvas and sewn together to create the three hangings.

Support for families of those with disabilities
The Learning Disabilities Association of Montgomery County is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing advocacy, education and resources for families and people with learning disabilities. They are a local affiliate of the LDA of America. In addition to maintaining a resource list of professionals, the group provides educational presentations and a monthly newsletter, a support group for families and The Fun Bunch, and a young adult group that meets at least once a month to discuss work and how to build relationships and friendships. Wheeling around the county
The Montgomery County Department of Transportation offers Youth Cruiser Monthly Passes and Youth Summer Cruiser Passes good for unlimited rides on Ride On buses. Passes are valid for those 18 years old and younger. High school students older than 18 can also purchase the passes. The cost is of the monthly pass is $11, the summer pass, $18. The Kids Ride Free Program, which offered free rides on weekdays from 2 to 7 p.m., has been suspended.
