Steelers teams win flag titles

The Stephen Decatur Steelers 10-11-year old flag football team finished off its NFL Flag Football season by winning the league championship with a 13-0 victory against the Suitland Recreational Center Jaguars in the title game.

Xavier Robinson caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from DeAngelo Simpson to give the Steelers a 6-0 halftime lead. Simpson ran 15 yards for a touchdown in the second half. Aaron Maple, Khalil Moody, Xavier Robinson and Scott Welcher turned in key plays on defense and Javon Smith helped seal the shutout with an interception with less than four minutes to play.

Arick Simms, Earl Childress, Delaan Hudson, Dylan Turner and Aaron Makle also made key contributions in the win.

Steelers win flag title

The Stephen Decatur Steelers A 8-9-year old football team won the NFL Flag Football championship on Saturday with a 14-0 victory against the Suitland Panthers A team.

The defense led the way as the Steelers finished with a 9-0 record. The team didn’t allow any touchdowns during the regular season and only one TD in the playoffs. Shawn Moss, Terrell Brown, Frank Warner, Shaikh Carmichael, DeQuan Bowman, Christian West, Darrell Wright and Nomi Brown helped lead an offense that averaged 34.3 points per game this season. The Steelers completed an unbeaten season with just eight players on the team, including five who played both offense and defense.

The Steelers are coached by Frank Warner and assistant Jerry Lyle.

Clinton teamwins McSoccerfest

The Clinton-based Griffins FC boys’ soccer team won theU-13 championship at the 15th annual McDonald’s Soccerfest 4-on-4 Tournament in Columbia.

Elmer Ventura Cruz, Anthony Saravia, Maukarios Derby, Jose Morales, Nelson Morales and Jonathino Morales are members of Clinton under the guidance of coach Brian Derby.

McSoccerfest attracted 495 teams and more than 15,000 people throughout the weekend.

Assault beat Wizards

The D.C. Assault U-11 boys’ basketball team earned a 43-25 victory against the Potomac Valley Wizards last week in the Tom Jones Summer League. Ra’Mond Hines led the way with 11 points, 10 rebounds, four blocked shots, three steals and two assists. Adam Hamilton also had 11 points and added five assists, three rebounds and three steals.

Aaron Thomas, Develle Phillips, Isaiah Martin, Jamal Wright, Jamar Arrinbell, Jiar Watson, Jordan Barr, Justin Route, Khalid Slocum, Michael Jackson and Stevon Douglass also contributed as the Assault combined for 43 points, 31 rebounds, 19 steals, 11 assists and six blocks.

Sharks set marks

The Fort Washington Sharks dropped a 283-247 decision to New Carrollton Recreation in week two of Prince-Mont Swim League action on Saturday. The Sharks stayed close by way of several swimmers recording personal marks that resulted in numerous runner-up and third-place efforts.

Jared Saunders (9-10 boys) and Michael True (11-12 boys) set personal marks in the butterfly. Saunders also won the breaststroke. Jacqueline Taylor lowered her mark in the fly by five seconds. Eva Gonzalez and Kimberly Scott lowered their marks by a second each in the 13-14 girls’ fly, as did Nick Leighton in the 15-18 boys’ fly. Scott also lowered her mark by a second in the freestyle. Gonzalez also won the back in record time.

In other free events, runner-up Alexander Plansky (9-10 boys) took five seconds off his mark. Arthur Walton (15-18 boys) was also runner-up with a new mark.

Kristian Spears (13-14 boys) was runner-up by better than four seconds off his mark. Celyna Jackson chopped eight seconds off her mark in the breaststroke and Katie Rice took four seconds off her mark. Rice also took two seconds off her mark in the backstroke. Erin Dullahan lowered her mark in the breast by more than a second, took nearly two seconds off her best in the individual medley and also won the free.

Mary Kamon (9-10 girls) and her brother Charis (11-12 boys) set new marks in the back, Charis by 10 seconds. Jacqueline Taylor (11-12 girls) and Dakota Hinely (13-14 boys) set marks in runner-up efforts. Hinely also won the fly. Amanda Watson and Carolyn Plansky (U-8 girls) also set marks in the back.

Basem Magd (13-14 boys) was third in the IM with a new mark. Jonathan Brevard (15-18 boys) was runner-up with a new mark.

Marcus Dennis (11-12 boys) was a triple winner in the free, breast and IM. Akeyla Holley (9-10 girls) was a double winner in the fly and free and took second in the breast behind teammate Kiara Leath. Arthur Walton (15-18 boys) was a double winner in the breast and back.

David King (back), Ryan Bonomo (breast) and Brian Wynn (free) were winners in the U-8 boys’ races, while Gaby Griffin won the 9-10 girls’ back.

Coaches needed

The Fort Washington Stallions are looking for experienced volunteer football coaches and cheer coaches for their inaugural season this fall. Candidates must undergo a background check. The Clinton Boys and Girls Club is seeking football, cheerleading and soccer coaches and players for the fall season. Coaches must undergo a background check and become ASEP certified. The Oxon Hill Boys and Girls Club will hold football, cheerleading and soccer registration from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 7 at the Oxon Hill Staff Development Center. The Potomac Valley AAU Football League is registering new teams for the 2008 season. The league is nationally based and teams will have the chance to play their way into the AAU Nationals in Florida. Elijah Brooks Elite Training Services will offer a strength and conditioning camp for ages 12 to 21, focusing on sport-specific development. Basketball events planned

Holy Family CYO is sponsoring a J.V.⁄Varsity Girls Summer Basketball League on Saturdays beginning July 12 at Holy Family Gym in Temple Hills. AAU, YBOA and CYO teams are encouraged to join along with girls’ ages 9 to 13. The league format includes eight games plus playoffs. The registration deadline is Wednesday.
