Thurmont readies for Guardian Hose carnival
Thurmont's Guardian Hose Fire Company Carnival is set to begin Monday with entertainment, fried chicken dinner platters and pay-one-price for rides.
The carnival, which runs through July 11, will feature a fireworks display on Tuesday evening and a fireman's parade from Blue Ridge Avenue to Boundary Avenue on July 9.
From 5 to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, volunteers will serve up dinner platters of fried chicken, stuffed pork chops, fish and shrimp, roast beef sandwiches and meatloaf, with two side dishes, for $7 each.
For $20, carnival-goers can purchase pay-one-price, ride-all-night tickets from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., Monday and Wednesday. A reduced-price ride night is scheduled for Tuesday.
Attendees can also purchase 14 pre-sale ride tickets for $10, from 9 a.m. to 3p.m., Saturday and Sunday at the carnival grounds or at Woodsboro Bank, PNC Bank or Bank of America in Thurmont.
Carnival chairman Donald Stitely noted that Majestic Midways has been providing the carnival's rides for 40 years.
The carnival is the biggest fundraiser for the Guardian Hose Company, which aims to raise $60,000 each year, he added. Proceeds from the carnival will help the fire company pay the mortgage on its three-year-old fire hall building, Stitely said.
Stitely, who has served nearly 44 years as carnival chairman, said about 150 volunteers from the fire company and community will help out during the weeklong carnival.
