Illegal immigrants need to drive, too
People that are illegally in the United States have a need for a driver's license. These immigrants would not harm anyone by applying for a license. I find it unnecessary to revoke this privilege from illegal immigrants.
Maryland should remove the lawful presence [law] to allow illegal immigrants [to] apply for a driver's license. This law now requires applicants for a Maryland driver's license or identification card to provide a valid Social Security number and proof of residency.
I have seen several immigrants struggling on finding their way to work. Perhaps there is transportation (Metro bus, taxi, Metro train), to help these people move around for work, but the problem is time. With a driver's license, if a person has to do labor in Virginia but lives in Maryland, it can be much easier and faster to get to Virginia.
I just hope that illegal immigrants' voices can be heard. I understand that Maryland wants to strengthen their security, but they also have to understand that there are people that do not intend to harm anyone. I'm pretty sure there are other ways to strengthen security.
On one hand, I am glad that I am a U.S. citizen, who has the rights to obtain a Maryland driver's license. On the other hand, it is sad to see how some of my relatives are suffering the consequences of being illegal immigrants in this country. But I sure have confidence that someone will help these illegal immigrants see a better tomorrow with a driver's license in their hand.
