Community market in Cheverly to open July 11, 25
The Cheverly Community Market will run from 8 a.m. to noon July 11 and 25 at the Cheverly Community Center at 6401 Forest Road. Local cover band, The Hot Noodles, will perform. The July 11 market will feature a plant clinic with the Cheverly Master Gardeners group. Landover Army private completes basic training
Domonique Belcher completed nine weeks of Army basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. Belcher, a 2008 graduate of Capitol Heights' Fairmont Heights High School, was responsible for learning skills such as rifle marksmanship, first aid, bayonet training and armed and unarmed combat. Hyattsville resident graduates from William and Mary
Tara Mahoney, a Hyattsville resident, graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. in June. Mahoney earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the public university.
Free math class open
to area students
The Maryland 21st Century Community Learning Centers will hold a free summer math enrichment program from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Aug. 11 Monday through Thursday at five schools: DuVal High School in Lanham, Gaywood Elementary in Seabrook, Thomas Claggett Elementary in District Heights, Thomas Johnson Middle in Lanham and Walker Mill Middle in Capitol Heights.
Targeted grades are rising fifth- through 12th-graders who will receive 90 minute math lessons and help with the Maryland School Assessment and High School Assessment. Classes will be held at DuVal at 9880 Good Luck Road, Gaywood at 6701 97th Ave., Thomas Claggett at 2001 Addison Road, Thomas Johnson at 5401 Barker Place, and Walker Mill Middle at 800 Karen Blvd. Other locations include Capitol Heights' Gethsemane United Methodist Church at 910 Addison Road South, Capitol Heights' Walker Mill Baptist Church at 6801 Walker Mill Road and Glenn Dale's Reid Temple AME Church at 11400 Glenn Dale Blvd. Lunch will be provided. Capitol Heights student honored for cheerleading
Audrey L. Abernathy of Capitol Heights was recognized by the United States Achievement Academy for her excellence in cheerleading. Abernathy is a student at G. James Gholson Middle School in Landover and is the daughter of Sarah O'Neal. The United States Achievement Academy, based in Lexington, Ky., recognizes students across the nation for their achievements in academics, sports and extracurricular groups.
Youth technology group
plans summer activities
Patriots Technology Training Center, a group that exposes youth to extracurricular math and science activities, will hold a series of summer camps and trips throughout the summer.
The Patriots Summer Camp on Technology for sixth- through 12th-graders is being held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. until July 31 at Landover's Kenmoor Middle School at 2300 Kenmoor Drive. Students must bring their own lunches. The cost is $500 for PTTC members and $600 for those that are not. Parents or guardians can pay $50 extra per week for aftercare service.
Youth may also register for the Junior National Society of Black Engineers two-day summer camp conference in Raleigh, N.C. The date has not been finalized. The cost is $160 but $100 for students in the Patriots Summer Camp on Technology. A "Bio-Medical Summer Camp" is available to high school students from Monday through July 17. The first week will be held at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda and the second will be held at Kenmoor Middle.
Students interested in robotics may enroll in the "Lego Robotics Summer Camp" that runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 13 through July 24 at Kenmoor Middle. The cost is $350 for PTTC members and $400 for non-PTTC members. Students must provide their own lunch at each camp with the exception of the Junior NSBE trip.
Gospel dance group opens floor up for new dancers
The Gospel Lights Liturgical Dance Ministry, a mother-daughter-led dance ministry, invites residents who want to become members of Gospel Lights to attend an orientation from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 15. Classes, which begin Sept. 5, will be held at Joe's Movement Emporium at 3309 Bunker Hill Road in Mount Rainier. Classes will end on the last Saturday in June 2010. The cost is $500 and can be paid in four installments of $125 over 10 months or all at once on Aug. 15.
