Grace Brethren gets soccer honors
Several Grace Brethren Christian School girls' soccer players and their former coach were honored recently by the National Christian Schools Athletic Association.
Coach Matt Geier, now the head women's soccer coach at Prince George's Community College, was named the NCSAA All-American Coach of the Year. Senior Caitlin Harris was selected to NSCAA First Team, and Brooke Carter was selected to the second team. Harris was a Gazette-Star All-County First Team player in 2008.
"Anytime you get an All-American honor it's always a welcome addition to the resume," Geier said. "It was a pleasant surprise. We always had some very good players like Aletheia Fadness, Alicia Jernigan and later Caitlin Roland and Caitlin Harris and Brooke Carter. I'm happy for the girls, too. They put in a lot of hard work."
During her junior season with the Eagles, Harris scored 15 goals and added 13 assists. The midfielder currently is playing in a summer 7-on-7 league at PGCC every Wednesday with several Grace Brethren teammates. Harris is hoping to attend Winthrop beginning in 2010.
"I was really quite honored to be selected," Harris said. "I'm excited going into the fall season and being selected for something like that gives me that much more confidence that I can go further in my soccer career. Last year we lost a lot of seniors and we had some doubts about the season, but we had one of the best years in school history."
Two Crusaders get offers
Riverdale Baptist High football coach Bob Shields said two of his players have received college scholarship offers. Defensive back Brian Burns received an offer from Temple University in Philadelphia on Monday, and Steven Thames, who transferred from St. John's, got an offer from Delaware State University in Dover, Del., on Saturday. Burns was a Gazette-Star Second Team selection last season.
