Silver Spring man recipient of William Stahl Award
Thomas B. Hargrave Jr. of Silver Spring has been named the F. William Stahl Award recipient for 2009. A distinguished honor, the Stahl Award is presented by the North American Fellowship of YMCA Retirees to the person who has significantly contributed to the YMCA movement through the art of written expression and communication.
Washington Adventist Hospital Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Paul Nicholson has been appointed chairman of the Board of Trustees for Montgomery Hospice.
Nicholson, formerly treasurer of the Montgomery Hospice board, has served in his role at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park for four years. He received his B.A. in hospital administration from Concordia College in Moorehead, MN, and his M.B.A in health care administration for Baruch College, City University of New York (CUNY).

Social & Scientific Systems of Silver Spring named Joseph O'Neill to its advisory board. O'Neill held senior management positions in the Clinton and Bush administrations and was instrumental in designing President Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.
Sandy Kursban, founder and chairman of Family and Nursing Care, located in Silver Spring, received a Leadership in Aging Award for her contributions to the field of aging on June 4 at the Fannie Mae Building in Washington, D.C., according to a news release.
Elisabeth Orchard has been named executive director of Springvale Terrace Retirement Community, sponsored by the United Church of Christ Homes Inc. in Silver Spring. She has a master's degree in nonprofit management from the College of Notre Dame of Baltimore and has more than 10 years experience working with older adults in a long-term care facility, an assisted living community and an area agency on aging. Most recently, she worked as the director of 24-hour services for a crisis center and a shelter for victims of domestic violence.
