County police offering rabies clinics
The Montgomery County Police Department Animal Services Division will sponsor rabies vaccination clinics monthly through September.
Maryland law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets over the age of four months be vaccinated against rabies, police reported. Failure to vaccinate an animal as required may subject the owner to a $500 fine.
The clinics will run 10 to 11:30 a.m. July 19, Aug. 16 and Sept. 20 at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter, 14645 Rothgeb Drive in Rockville.
The rabies vaccinations will be administered by a participating veterinarian at no charge for dogs and cats owned by residents of Montgomery County. There will be a $4 charge for ferrets and out-of-county pets.
All dogs must be leashed. Cats and ferrets must be in carriers or otherwise contained. County residents, as well as residents of Rockville and Gaithersburg, will be required to purchase a pet license if their pet is not licensed.
During the past year, rabies cases have been reported in 49 states and Puerto Rico. Anyone with questions may call 240-773-5929.
