Sandy Spring sizzles past Cissel
Bonser's complete game, offensive onslaught propel Post 68 to fifth straight victory
With just 10 days remaining in the regular season for the county's American Legion baseball teams, there isn't a squad hotter than Sandy Spring Post 68.
On Tuesday afternoon, Post 68 extended its winning streak to five games with a 9-2 victory over Cissel Saxon Post 41 at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda.
All facets were clicking for Post 68 (10-4), which exploded for seven second-inning runs, capped by outfielder Pat Launi's two-run blast over the right-center field fence. Sandy Spring is receiving contributions from all slots in the lineup, hitting at a sizzling clip of .342 and averaging nearly 7.5 runs per game.
The offensive outburst proved to be more than enough support for pitcher Stephen Bonser (1.46 ERA), who struck out eight in a complete game effort.
"The huge inning gave me a lot of confidence to go out and relax," Bonser said. "I pretty much could [cruise]. All three pitches were working."
Alex Goodman singled home Jimmy Beifont and Josh Leemhuis in the bottom of the fourth for Post 68's final runs.
"We are hitting the ball real well too and defense is coming up," said Bonsor. "We can compete with anyone."
Post 41 (8-5) held a brief 1-0 advantage after scoring in their half of the second. Brandon Grove's infield single drove in Cory Beahm during the top of the fifth for the final deficit.
