Sharks swim well in openers

The Fort Washington Sharks (1-1) dropped their first meet of the Prince-Mont Swim League season Saturday, losing a 277-263 decision to Cheverly in Division C action.

Don Brazelton, Dakota Hinely and Prescott Stewart all repeated their triple wins from the season-opening win against Adelphi. Brazelton claimed the U-8 boys’ freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, with Hinely taking the 11-12 boys’ back, butterfly and individual medley and Stewart winning the 15-18 boys’ fly, breast and IM.

Gabby Griffin won the 9-10 girls’ free and back against Cheverly after capturing a triple victory a week earlier in the fly, free and back. Spencer Bailey had a triple win against Adelphi in the 11-12 girls’ fly, free and back.

Brandon Dennis (11-12 boys) was a repeat double winner in the free and breast. Arthur Walton (13-14 boys) was a double winner in the free and breast against Adelphi and a double winner in the IM and breast against Cheverly. Daniel Leighton won the 15-18 boys’ free and back.

Ashley Bodine won the 15-18 girls’ breast and IM against Cheverly and Colleen McFadden claimed the 15-18 girls fly and back. Erin Dullahan was best in the 11-12 girls’ breast and IM against Adelphi.

Marcus Dennis (9-10 boys) captured the free in the opener. Chelsea Hemphill and Cara Brennan (11-12 girls) took the free and breast, respectively, against Cheverly, while Akeyla Holley (U-8 girls) was first against Cheverly in the breast.

Eagles make mark at USA track meet

Southern Maryland Eagles Track and Field Club members Tyree Randolph, Tre’ Jones, Carlos Washington and Roy Melvin captured the U-8 sub-bantam, 400-meter relay (1-minute, 3.52 seconds) at the Potomac Valley USA Track and Field Championships June 17 at Reservoir High School. The quartet advanced to the Junior Olympics Region 3 Championships July 7 in Atlanta. Jones also won the long jump championship with leap of 3.11 meters.

Kaylah Smith and Lorenzo Ervin (200), Michael Ford (shot put, javelin) and the boys’ 1,600 relay team (Jeremiah King, Washington, Ervin and DeSaahn Russell) also qualified for the U-8 division at the USA Track and Field Championships.

Melvin and Randolph will also compete in the 100 in Atlanta.

Church basketball season begins

The Ebenezer AME Church of Fort Washington’s summer basketball program is under way. The U-12 team defeated First AME of Gaithersburg in the Second District AMEC Summer Youth Basketball League season opener. The U-13 and U-15 teams from the Fort Washington church also were victorious.

Ebenezer AME is accepting registration for its intramural league for ages 6 to 12. Games are held Saturdays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Forestville High School. Call 240-882-8785 or 301-257-0969.

Stars go 1-2

The Star Youth Athletics U-9 boys’ basketball team went 1-2 last weekend at the East Coast Clash Tournament at Ashburn, Va.

The Stars beat the Black Top Heat, 32-21, and dropped decisions to Slam-N-Jam (38-34) and the Bentalou Bombers (31-20).

Aaron Thomas and Michael Jackson led the Stars in the three games with 27 and 20 points, respectively. Thomas also added 12 rebounds, while Jackson had nine boards, two blocked shots and six steals. Develle Phillps was the team’s top rebounder with 27 and also had seven blocked shots.

Jamar Wright had 17 points, eight rebounds, 10 steals and four assists. Enrique Foggs added 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Adam Hamilton had two points and seven rebounds and David Dasher had four points.

U-8 boys win league title

The Men With Vision U-8 boys’ basketball team captured the championship in the MJM Spring League and will travel to Memphis for the AAU Nationals. Team members include Timothy Williams, D’yon Preston, Gregg Boyd, Dallion Whitley, Rashad Christian, Darius Daniels, Samuel Green Jr., Shaun Wilson, Shane Holmes, Asiel Horton, Brandon Nelson, Cameron Austin, Eric Reynolds, and coaches Gregg Boyd and Scott Christian.

FWARC holds football registration

The Fort Washington Area Recreation Council Boys and Girls Club is holding football registration for the 2006 season.
