First Generation College Bound honors Class of 2009
Thirty-seven students from Laurel High School recently participated in First Generation College Bound's 19th Annual Celebration in recognition of the Class of 2009 on June 17.
First Generation College Bound is a Laurel-based nonprofit that helps low- to moderate-income students improve in school and get into college.

Scotchtown Hills announces principal award recipients
Laurel's Scotchtown Hills Elementary School recently announced the recipients of the Principal Honor Roll award for the fourth quarter.
The award is given to students in second through sixth grade who have at least a 4.0 grade point average with no grade on the report card below an A.

Laurel students graduate from St. John's College High School
Three students from Laurel recently graduated from St. John's College High School in Washington, D.C., on June 5.
Kayla Cashwell, Megan Douglass and Kelly Glen were among the 247 graduates.
Cashwell graduated as a member of the National Honor Society.
St. John's College High School is an independent, Catholic, college preparatory secondary school located in the Northwest Washington neighborhood of Chevy Chase.
Woodland Job Corps teens cook in Iron Chef' competition
Eight aspiring chefs from the Woodland Job Corps Center in Laurel participated in the 2009 Job Corps Culinary Arts Expo June 15 through 19 at Atlantic Cape Community College in Mays Landing, N.J.
The Woodland culinary students participating in the expo are Cauleen Mangialetti, Latisa Toland, Anthony Palmer Jr., Angelica Martinez, Julia Briggs-Moseley, Delanta Harrell, Ashley Thomas and Ashley Williams.
Job Corps is the nation's largest and oldest federally-funded job training and education program for "at promise" youth ages 16 through 24.
Laurel resident to represent nation
Laurel native and Florida State University student Tiffany McCarty will be representing the United States as a member of the U-20 Women's National Soccer Team in their travels to Germany from June 19 to June 27.
The United States faced England U-19s on June 22 in Flensburg, and will play Germany U-19s on Friday at Wolfgang Meyer Stadion in Hamburg.
Laurel High students win honors scholarship
Laurel High School seniors Fri-Atsoh Achirimofor and Kayla Fowler were amongst 143 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholars honored by the Maryland State Department of Education.
The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program recognizes students that show promise of continued excellence as they pursue higher education. Principals at both public and private schools nominate students from the top 1 percent of their graduating classes for this prestigious award.
Each honoree receives a four-year scholarship worth up to $1,500 per year to be used for undergraduate study at any institution of higher education based on cost of attendance.
Laurel Knights of Columbus wins award
The Knights of Columbus Patuxent Council #2203 of Laurel was recently awarded first place for providing the best ongoing program for senior citizens over all other Maryland Knights of Columbus Councils in Division A for 2008-2009 at the Annual Knights of Columbus Maryland State Convention held in May.
Through the Self-Help and Resource Exchange Program, the council volunteers work with senior citizens from Park View, Laurel Lakes and Selborne House to both accept SHARE orders and deliver their SHARE food packages to their respective apartment lobby without the seniors ever having to leave their buildings.
Sons of American Legion election results are in
The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 60 and the Ladies' Auxiliary Unit 60 had its elections on May 21.
For the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 60, Frank R. Owens was elected Commander, David Griffith was elected 1st Vice Commander, Kevin Shaffer was elected 2nd Vice Commander, Sean Griffith was elected Finance Officer, Tony Scovitch was elected Chaplain, Todd Payton was elected Sergeant at Arms, and Eddie Souder was elected Adjutant.
For the Ladies' Auxiliary Unit 60, Linda Reid was elected President, Lesley Brinton was elected 1st Vice President, Carol Worsham was elected 2nd Vice President, Anselma Obremski was elected Secretary, Jeanne McDevitt was elected Treasurer, Angie Dixon was elected Chaplain, Vickie Kunde was elected Color Bearer and Judy Naugle was elected Sergeant at Arms.
Laurel-based graphic design studio wins award
Laurel-based graphic design studio Dever Designs was recently named a winner in the American Corporate Identity/25 Competition.
Dever Designs won awards for their Fertile Minds Ad, National Association of REALTORS Media Kit and Society for Neuroscience 2008 Annual Report.
Youth technology group plans summer activities
Patriots Technology Training Center, a group that exposes youth to extracurricular math and science activities, will hold a series of summer camps and trips beginning in late June.
The Patriots Summer Camp on Technology for sixth- through 12th-graders will be held Monday through July 31 at Landover's Kenmoor Middle School at 2300 Kenmoor Drive. Camp lasts from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and students must bring their own lunches. The cost is $500 for PTTC members and $600 for those are not. Parents or guardians can pay $50 extra per week for aftercare service.
Youth may also register for the Junior National Society of Black Engineers two-day summer camp conference in Raleigh, N.C. The date in July has not been finalized. The cost is $160 and $100 for students in the Patriots Summer Camp on Technology. A "Bio-Medical Summer Camp" is available to high school students July 6 through 17. The first week will be held at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda and the second will be held at Kenmoor Middle.
Students interested in robotics may enroll in the "Lego Robotics Summer Camp" that runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 13 through 24 at Kenmoor Middle. The cost is $350 for PTTC members and $400 for non-PTTC members. Students must provide their own lunch at each camp with the exception of the Junior NSBE trip
