Suitland teen sentenced to 25 years after stabbing death
16-year-old pleaded guilty to attempted murder
A 16-year-old from Suitland will serve five years in prison, after pleading guilty to attempted second-degree murder for repeatedly stabbing a Landover man in September, according to the Prince George's County state's attorney's office.
Johnny Alphonzo Barber was charged along with his brother, Gregory Alexander Barber, 22, for brutally stabbing and throwing Emmanuel Simmons of Landover from a moving vehicle.
Johnny Barber was sentenced Friday to 25 years incarceration, with all suspended but five years, and five years of supervised probation after his release.
According to a statement from the state's attorney's office, Simmons, 26, picked up Johnny and Gregory Barber on Sept. 7 at the Gateway apartment complex in Oxon Hill and agreed to drive the brothers to Silver Hill Road. On the way there, Gregory Barber asked Simmons if they could be dropped off elsewhere and Simmons refused.
Johnny Barber began repeatedly stabbing Simmons in the neck and head with a knife from the backseat while Gregory Barber stabbed Simmons in the chest, neck, and head. Simmons was then thrown from the moving vehicle, and the brothers drove off in his vehicle.
Johnny Barber was charged with attempted murder, assault and carjacking and pleaded guilty to second degree attempted murder in April.
Gregory Barber is charged with attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, theft, carjacking and armed carjacking, along with robbery and concealed weapons charges. His trial is scheduled for July 6.
Johnny Barber's attorney, Erin Marie Josendale of Upper Marlboro, and Gregory Barber's attorney, Stephen O. Russell of Riverdale, did not respond to phone messages requesting comment.
