Fire⁄RescueFor many years, fire and rescue services were provided almost exclusively by volunteers. A growing population has made that impractical. To pay for the increasing number of paid fire and rescue personnel throughout the county, fire tax districts were created in 2002. Emmitsburg, Wolfsville, Sabillasville and Mount Airy are exempt.
