Frederick County historyFrederick County was settled in the late 18th century, and included immigrants from England, Scotland, Ireland and Germany. The county itself was created on June 11, 1748, by the Maryland Provincial Assembly and was named after Frederick Calvert, the last Lord Baltimore. The original county boundaries included Montgomery, Washington, Allegany and Garrett counties as well as parts of Carroll County and Washington, D.C. The last boundary change occurred in 1937, and included the transfer of parts of Frederick County to Carroll County. Between 1940 and 1980, the county population more than doubled to roughly 118,000 residents. The county’s population as of 2001, the most recent number available, was 203,789. It is anticipated to rise to 281,710 by 2020.
