College Park announces annual Green Awards winners
The College Park Committee for a Better Environment has announced the winners of its seventh annual Green Awards, given to residents, organizations and businesses that are committed to environmentally sound practices in the city.
Resident Russell Robinette and Joanna Calabrese, a former University of Maryland, College Park, student, each received their awards at a June 8 City Council meeting.
Robinette has picked up litter on a near-daily basis for several years in his Berwyn neighborhood, while Calabrese who graduated from UM this past spring helped lead a successful effort last year to prevent UM from clearing nine acres of on-campus forest to make way for proposed development.
CBE co-chairman Stephen Jascourt presented Robinette and Calabrese with certificates of appreciation at the June 8 ceremony. Robinette and Calabrese also received $100 gift certificates from Recreational Equipment Inc. in College Park.
Beltsville resident graduates from N.C. prep school
Kemi Ajenifuja of Beltsville graduated from St. Mary's School, a college-preparatory, all-girls boarding school in Raleigh, N.C.
Ajenifuja was among 67 high school seniors who received diplomas at the school's May 23 commencement. She also received the school's Marian Drane Graham Commencement Award, given to a graduate who exhibits strong academic performance, leadership and personal character.
St. Mary's was founded in 1842 and teaches ninth- to 12th-grade girls. It is the seventh-largest girls' boarding school in the country.
Ajenifuja plans to attend Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. Her parents are Abraham and Catherine Ajenifuja of Beltsville.
Langley Park-McCormick Elementary to get makeover
Langley Park-McCormick Elementary School will have a redesigned library in October by The Heart of American Foundation and Capital One Financial Corporation.
The announcement was made during a June 10 school assembly. Volunteers will fix library shelves and redecorate the library in the READesign project. It will also include vibrant paint, new furniture and artwork by a nationally known artist. The program is meant to encourage reading in young children and community involvement, according to a release.
Residents invited to design Greenbelt's anniversary logo
The city of Greenbelt is asking residents to design a logo and slogan celebrating the city's 75th anniversary.
The city, which was founded in 1937, will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2012. Residents are asked to submit possible logos and slogans, and the winning entry will likely be used on posters, banners, T-shirts, hats and other items.
Logo designs must contain the word "Greenbelt" and must feature the city's time span, written as "1937-2012." The winning entrant will receive a $75 gift certificate to the Greenbelt Consumer Co-op grocery store.
The deadline to submit entries is June 25. They must be mailed on no larger than 11-by-17-inch paper to Isabelle Gournay, at 7 Woodland Way, Greenbelt, MD, 20770. Entries may also be e-mailed as PDF files to gournay@umd.edu.
College Park Lions Club awards scholarships
The College Park Lions Club has awarded eight $1,000 scholarships and three $100 savings bonds to Prince George's County students.
The eight scholarships given to graduating seniors were awarded to Cynthia Whoolery of Beltsville and Kayla Hyatt of Temple Hills, who attended Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg; David Singh of Beltsville and Philip Damron of Hyattsville, who attended DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville; Giovanna Sandoval of Hyattsville, who attended Northwestern High School in Hyattsville; Yi Chen and Jamie Singh of Beltsville, who attended High Point High School in Beltsville; and Peter Lau-Lopez of Riverdale, who attended Parkdale High School in Riverdale.
Lau-Lopez will attend Montgomery College, while the other seven winners will attend the University of Maryland, College Park.
Savings bond winners were Eduardo Escamilla of Beltsville and Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Beltsville, Nataly Martinez of Hyattsville and Buck Lodge Middle School in Adelphi and Elizabeth Mehalick of New Carrollton, who attends Girl Scout meetings at Holy Redeemer School in College Park.
Hyattsville resident graduates from Quinnipiac University
Jeremy C. Baker graduated from Quinnipiac University during a May 16 commencement ceremony. Baker earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology at the university, located in Hamden, Conn.
Adelphi resident graduates from Villanova University
Sarah Parolski of Adelphi has graduated from Villanova University in Villanova, Pa.
Parolski received a bachelor's degree in nursing at the school's May 16 commencement. More than 1,700 students received degrees.
Villanova University is a co-educational, Roman Catholic school founded in 1842. It has more than 10,000 students.
College Park resident earns master's degree
Joshua Clayton of College Park has graduated from the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. He received a master's degree in civil engineering at the school's commencement on May 22.
The University of New Hampshire was founded in 1866 and has about 12,200 undergraduate students.
Northwestern High student named Scholar of the Week
The Prince George's County Public School system's Scholar of the Week last week was Northwestern High School senior William Sama. He had a cumulative 4.125 grade-point average, won the coach's award in soccer in his junior and senior years and the coach's award in tennis during his junior year. Sama is a member of the National Honor Society, Mock Trial, Environmental Science Club and the track and field team. Sama had a summer internship last year with the University of Maryland, College Park's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and he plans on becoming a nuclear engineer.
Eleanor Roosevelt High alum graduates basic training
Reginald A. Jackson, a 2006 graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, completed basic military training at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Jackson, the son of Lanham resident Kinsey Terrace and Hyattsville resident Reginald Allen, spent eight weeks in training and earned four credits toward an associate in applied science degree from the Community College of the Air Force.
Greenbelt resident earns Ph.D. from Lehigh University
Zhipeng Song of Greenbelt earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., on June 9. Song joined 1,434 other graduates of the private research university, founded in 1865. The commencement address was given by Nobel Prize-winning author Elie Wiesel.
