Athlete of the Year

Audrey Gariepy-Bogui, Churchill, senior; Repeat Athlete of the Year set four records at county meet and won four regional titles. Ended career with three state titles, three personal-bests at 4A states. Won 100 hurdles (13.77 seconds), triple jump (38 feet, 2.5 inches) and high jump (5-8). Also set p.r. of 43.66 to take second in state in 300 hurdles. First team in both hurdle events and high jump.

CO-Coaches of the Year

Steve Bettis and Scott Silverstein, Churchill, 2nd year; Juggled deep roster and had best athletes firing at right time, leading Bulldogs to county, regional titles, and second in states.

First team

*Ashley Decruise, Richard Montgomery, Senior, 100m; Only county runner to break 12 seconds, did so in winning county title. Also won region title, took second at 4A states.

*Katie Wolf, Churchill, Freshman, 200, 400m; Burst onto scene to win county, regional titles in 200 and 400. At states, took second in 200 (24.73 seconds), fourth in 400 (58.48).

*Leslie Morrison, Whitman, Junior, 800m; Ran county-best 2:14.02, while bleeding from fall, to win state title after finishing second last year and during indoor.

*Morgane Gay, Whitman, Senior, 1,600m; Dominated event, sweeping county, regional and state titles. Broke five minutes twice, including 4:55.27 at regionals.

*Halsey Sinclair, Blair, Senior, 3,200m; Capped career with county and regional titles. Won latter in 11:02.30, county’s best time of season.

*Richard Montgomery, 4x100 relay, (Ashley Decruise, Sr.; Ashlyn Decruise, Sr.; Chanel Hamilton, Jr.; Rianne Webb, Jr.); Ironed out handoff troubles in time to win 4A West Region title. Ran county-best 48.16 seconds at states, but missed title by .05.

*Richard Montgomery, 4x200 relay, (Ashley Decruise, Sr.; Ashlyn Decruise, Sr.; Chanel Hamilton, Jr.; Rianne Webb, Jr.); Same group who barely missed 4x100 title succeeded in 4x200, winning states in 1:40.75. Also claimed county, regional titles.

*Richard Montgomery, 4x400 relay, (Ashley Decruise, Sr.; Ashlyn Decruise, Sr.; Erin Hylton, Soph.; Rianne Webb, Jr.); Another clean sweep for Rockets, again with season’s best performance (3:53.45) coming in 4A state meet.

*Whitman 4x800 relay, (Itziar Belausteguigoitia, Fr.; Debbie Isen, Jr.; Gabrielle MacKenzie, Sr.; Leslie Morrison, Jr.); Duplicated last year’s performance by winning counties and regionals, taking second at states. Lowered last year’s best time, to 9:19.36 this spring.

*Leah Putman, Sherwood, Senior, Long jump; Posted area’s longest jump of season (17 feet, 8.5 inches) to win county title, then placed county-best fifth at 4A states.

*Bianca Williams, Holton-Arms, Senior, Triple jump; Private-school clone of Gariepy-Bogui won Independent School League title with county-best leap of 38 feet, 5 inches.

*Liz Calhoun, Wootton, Junior, Pole vault; County’s best by far, cleared 9 feet, 6 inches to win 4A West Region. Placed fourth at state meet.

*Brittany Moreland, Northwest, Senior, Shot put; Won county and 4A West Region titles, former with season’s best throw of 39 feet, 1 inch. Placed second in state.

*Arleigh Rose, Sherwood, Junior, Discus; Bounced back in big way from county, regional disappointment with state title-winning throw of 119 feet, 7 inches.
