Athlete of the Year

Elias Tousley, Bethesda-Chevy Chase, senior; Unbeatable in distance events down stretch. Double-winner in 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at Montgomery County, 3A West Region and 3A state championships. Had hand in 29 team points at state meet, helping 4x800 relay to second place and taking sixth in open 800. First-teamer in 1,600 and 3,200.

Coach of the Year

Greg Dunston, Georgetown Prep, 1st year; After 34 years as public-school coach, joined prep ranks and immediately won Interstate Athletic Conference title. Harnessed raw talent, turning freshmen and sophomores into winners of five of six individual running events at conference championships.

First team

*Salifu Cham, Einstein, Senior, 100m; Won county and 3A West Region titles, latter in county-best 10.84 seconds. Took fourth at 3A state meet in 10.93 seconds.

*Patrick Pinchinat, Richard Montgomery, Senior, 200m; Won county and 4A West Region titles, posting season’s fastest mark (21.93) in former.

*Jordan Sawadogo, Springbrook, Senior, 400m, 800m; Ran county’s fastest times of season in two events at 4A state meet. Placed second in 800 (1:54.49), third in 400 (49.08).

*Tyler Jackson, Richard Montgomery, Senior, 110m high hurdles; Won county and 4A West Region titles, former in count-best time of 14.86 seconds. Took second at states in 14.91.

*Jose Lopez, Magruder, Senior, 300m intermediate hurdles; Came within 0.23 seconds of county-regional-state trifecta. Ran county-best 39.10 at 4A states, but was beaten at lean.

*Gaithersburg 4x100 relay, (Dan Atwood, Jr.; Shean Cain, Sr.; Jeremy Marshall, Sr.; Sean Porter, Sr.); Early-season underdogs, champs by end. Won county, region, 4A state titles, running faster in each meet. Hit 42.75 at states.

*Richard Montgomery, 4x200 relay, (Brendan Etzel, Jr.; Gary Frazier, Jr.; Patrick Pinchinat, Sr; Brian Sickles, Sr.); Defended last year’s state championship with even better performance this spring, lowering school record to 1:27.78.

*Richard Montgomery, 4x400 relay, (Brendan Etzel, Jr.; Jon Ryan, Sr.; Lucas Sater, Sr.; Brian Sickles, Sr.); Won county, 4A West Region titles and placed second at state meet in county’s season-best time of 3:22.75.

*Quince Orchard 4x800 relay, (Neal Darmody, Jr.; Josh Joson, Jr.; David Laratta, Jr.; Reagan Lynch, Sr.); Broke eight-minute barrier two times, first at Penn Relays and then in finishing in county-best second place at 4A state meet in 7:58.22.

*Jamal Currica, Damascus, Senior, High jump; Followed up state indoor title with matching outdoor crown, clearing 6 feet, 6 inches. Best jump of season was 6-7.

*Gary Frazier, Richard Montgomery, Junior, Long jump; Emerged from pack with second-place performance at states, thanks to county-best jump of 22 feet, 4.5 inches.

*B.J. Shaw, Gaithersburg, Senior, Triple jump; Won county meet with season’s best jump (46 feet, 3.5 inches) and placed third at states.

*James Gabriel, Landon, Senior, Pole vault; Had county’s best vault (12 feet) and cleared 11-6 to win IAC.

*Sean Stanley, Gaithersburg, Sophomore, Shot put, Discus; Dominated shot put to repeat indoor state title. Turned raw talent into second-place state finish in discus.
