Athlete of the Year

Keenan Crutchfield

Richard Montgomery, Senior

Catalyst of Rockets’ county- and regional-title winning team. Won the county 200 meters and the 4A West Region 100 and 200. Earned first-team honors in both sprinting events, as well as for his part in anchoring the Rockets’ speedy 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Coach of the Year

Addison Hunt

Landon, 5th year

For many years, the Interstate Athletic Conference’s elite has been an exclusive club between Episcopal, Georgetown Prep and St. Albans, but this year, Hunt’s young Landon squad crashed the party. The Bears gave champion Episcopal a scare, nearly winning their first-ever title before finishing second, 148-131, at the conference championships last month. Amazingly, the Bears scored 131 points despite only winning one event and relying on mostly underclassmen.

Brian SicklesRichard Montgomery, Junior, 400m

Dipped under 50 seconds to 49.4 to win county title. Also finished first in region at 50.9.

Brenton FlurryEinstein, Senior, 800m

Time of 1:57.5 to win 3A state title was best mark of any half-miler this season. Also won 3A West Region crown at 1:58.8. Will run next year at Grambling State.

Chris MoenWalter Johnson, Sophomore, 1,600m

Super soph swept county, regional and state titles in the 4A. His county time of 4:15.9 broke former teammate Andrew Jesien’s 2005 meet record.

Elias TousleyBethesda-Chevy Chase, Junior, 3,200m

Won regional and state titles. His time of 9:29 at the Katie Jenkins Invitational was the county’s best. Also helped Barons to third-place finish at the 3A state meet, their best performance in many years.

Michael ShackelfordGeorgetown Prep, Senior,110m high hurdles

Time of 14.4 seconds to win the IAC title topped all other competitors, public or private.

Vincent BoshaMagruder, Senior, 300mintermediate hurdles

Dropped under 40 seconds to win county title in 39.7. Also won region in 40.1.

Richard Montgomery4x100 relayGary Frazier, Soph.; Vinny Brown, Jr.; Lucas Sator, Jr.; Keenan Crutchfield, Sr.

Rockets’ quartet was the undisputed speedsters of the county, winning title in 43.8 and taking the regional crown in 43.2.

Lightning-quick group swept county, regional and state titles, with their time of 1:27.98 at states setting the school record.

Trojans came on strong late, finishing first in region and second at states — the latter in a sub-8:00 time of 7:59.9.

Jamal CurricaDamascus, Junior, High jump

Second-place jump of 6-6 in 4A state meet was tops in the county.

Jeremiah LewisGaithersburg, Senior, Long jump

Jump of 21-2 1⁄2 won 4A West Region and beat all other county jumps in postseason. Will compete at Morgan State next year.

Jeremy HerringKennedy, Junior, Triple jump

No one in county beat Herring’s 3A West Region-winning mark of 43-10 1⁄2. Also won county at 42-7.

Nhi ThachGaithersburg, Senior, Pole vault

Posted best height of any vaulter with an 11-6 to win county title.

Matt MillerRichard Montgomery, Senior, Shot put

No one else eclipsed stocky thrower’s heave of 50-10 to win county title. Will throw at Maryland.

Bobby DuganGaithersburg, Senior, Discus

Without question, king of the discus. Finished 1-1-2 in county, region and state. Best throw was 157-1 at county meet.
