Runner of the Year
George Empty, Charles H. Flowers, Sr.
Empty got better throughout the season and dominated two of the most difficult events in the sport. The senior won the 4A South Region and 4A state championships in the 800 meters in 1 minute, 55 seconds. He also took the regional and state 400 titles, clocking in at less than 49 seconds in both victories.

Field Athlete of the Year
Dwayne Powell, Charles H. Flowers, Sr.
Powell said he performs best when the temperature rises. That explains now the senior saved his best performances for late in the season. He won the state long jump title with a leap of 23 feet, 3 inches. He also was sixth at the Penn Relays (23-1).

Coach of the Year
Richard Andrulonis, Bowie
Andrulonis helped guide the Bowie boys to their first county title since 1995. The Bulldogs won the county and 4A South Region titles in the 800-meter relay and a 4A South title in the 1,600 relay.

First Team
Ronald Darby, Potomac, Fr.
The talented freshman has a bright future after finishing second in the state 3A championships in the 100. He also pushed state 3A 100-meter record holder Devon Smith (Westlake High) in second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 at the 3A South Region meet.

Denny Long, Eleanor Roosevelt
Long proved he was the fastest prep athlete in the county with impressive performances throughout the post season. He won the state 4A 100 title, finished second in the 4A 200 and won both events at the 4A South Region meet.

Mark Davis, Central
Davis earned a state title in easy fashion, leading from start to finish as he captured the Class 3A championship in the 300 hurdles. The win gave him a triple crown of county, region and state titles in the event.

Jovon Edwards, Eleanor Roosevelt
Edwards dropped more than three seconds off of his time in the 800 from the state indoor championships, as he finished fourth (1 minute, 56.1 seconds). Edwards finished second in the 800 at the 4A South Region meet.

Cortney Mazyck, Suitland
Mazyck was the most consistent County 4A hurdler this spring. He won both the 110 and 300 hurdles at the 4A South Region meet and took third in both at the state meet. He also won the county 110 hurdles title.

Brian Faherty, Eleanor Roosevelt, Sr.
Faherty had little competition within the county in the distance events. The senior won the 1,600 and 3,200 in the county and 4A South Region meets.

Jeff Butler, Henry A. Wise
Butler was the premier thrower in the county, winning the county and 4A South Region shot put titles along with second-place finishes in the discus at the county and regional meets.

Robert Moore, Largo
Moore reached the victory circle twice in the state 3A meet, winning the 110 and 300 hurdles. He also swept those two events at the 3A South Region meet.

Paul Edwards, Bowie
Had Edwards been in another classification or region, he would have won more postseason honors in the 800, which had a deep county contingent this season. Still, Edwards won the county 800 championship to go along with a third-place effort at the 4A South Region meet.

Cory Puffett, DeMatha
Puffett was slowed by injuries late in the season, but proved that he may be the best distance runner in county. Puffett ran a school record of 9:19.11 in the 3,200 at the Southern Track Classic in May, was invited to the Penn Relays for the 3,000 and finished third at the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championships in the 3,200.

Jerimiah Hendy, Bowie
Hendy showed that his 6-foot-4 jump at the state indoor championships was no fluke as he bested it with a personal-best 6-6 effort to win the state 4A title in the high jump. He also won the 4A South Region high jump title.

Mike Milburn, DeMatha
Milburn, headed to the University of Delaware to play football, had given little thought to pursuing track before this season. But he came out for the team for the first time and won the 200 at the WCAC championships and anchored the Stags' victorious 400 relay team.

Ben McKenzie, Largo, Jr.
The junior looks to become the premier 400 runner in the state next season. This spring, McKenzie captured the 3A South Region 400 title to go along with a second-place finish in the state meet and a second-place finish at the county championships.
