Eastern county regional services center to host events
The Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center, 3300 Briggs Chaney Road, Silver Spring, will host a variety of events this month. For more information, call the center at 240-777-8400.
A presentation of final plans for the new Third District Police in White Oak will take place at 7 p.m. June 24 at the services center. The new station is scheduled to be built on Milestone Drive, near Route 29 and New Hampshire Avenue. Residents can provide feedback and ask questions. Residents are encouraged to attend.
Residents, businesses and community groups are invited to participate in the East County Capital Improvements project forum, which will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the services center. The county's public works and budget departments will be there to explain what projects are planned and take suggestions on further major projects needed for the area.
Swingin' in Silver Spring
The Silver Spring Swings Summer Concert Series 2009 will begin from 7 to 9 p.m. June 18 and run throughout the summer at the same time, every Thursday until Aug. 6. The concerts are held near the fountain on Ellsworth Drive, between Fenton Street and Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.
June 18 will feature Celtic folk rock from Jennifer Cutting & Ocean Orchestra. The June 25 show will feature rock cover band Second Wind.
Other bands scheduled to perform this summer are: The Fabulous Bel Airs: The David Bach Consort, The Knockout Kings vs. Bruce Ewan, Eliot Levine, Eddie Becker Band and Verny Varela. Ride with a purpose
Ride with the Maryland Fraternal Order of Police during its 10th Annual Motorcycle Ride on Sunday to benefit Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) Maryland Chapter.
C.O.P.S is a nonprofit that provides programs and services for the survivors of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in Maryland, according to a press release.
Registration and staging in Montgomery County is from 9 to 11 a.m. at Battley Harley-Davidson, 7830 Airpark Road, Gaithersburg.
Riders will be escorted to the Howard County Fairgrounds, 2210 Fairgrounds Road, West Friendship. Lunch is sponsored by Outback Steakhouse and riders will receive a run T-shirt.
A minimum donation of $25 per person is required for the escorted ride. There is no minimum donation for those interested in visiting the fairgrounds.
There will be prizes for the riders who collect the most in pledges and also door prizes, 50/50 raffle and vendors.

Regional Services Center to host classes, legal advice clinic
The African-American Health Program will offer free childbirth education and breastfeeding classes on Monday and Tuesday, as well as June 22 and 23 as part of its S.M.I.L.E. (Start More Infants Living Equally-healthy) program. Classes will be held at the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center, 3300 Briggs Chaney Road in Silver Spring.
Learn what you need to know to have a healthy baby and find out how to qualify for a free crib, car seat or one-year rental of Medela double breast electric pump. No children will be allowed. Montgomery County residency and ID are required. Bring a pillow and a mat for the class on June 22. Labor coaches and fathers welcome. Dinner will be provided. Burnt Mills neighborhood
group hosts yard sale
The Burnt Mills Citizens Association will hold a community yard sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Participants will have red flags placed in front of their houses. This is the first yard sale of this kind in the community's 50-plus years of existence.

Family Fun Night

The Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center will host a Family Fun Night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the community center, 14906 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville. Activities include a moon bounce, disc jockey, games, bingo, face painting, refreshments, crafts and preschool story time. Burtonsville native graduates from New York school
Burtonsville native Alisa Marie Schlosser, a 2005 graduate of St. John's College High School, has graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y. Schlosser graduated with a degree in Fine Art and minor in psychology. She is the daughter of Sheila and Richard Schlosser, both of Burtonsville.
Award-winning author
to speak at White Oak Library
George Pelecanos, an award-winning author of crime novels, film producer, essayist and writer, will discuss his new novel "The Way Home" at 7 p.m. today at the White Oak Library, 11701 New Hampshire Ave. in Silver Spring.
Pelecanos, a Silver Spring resident, has published 16 novels set in suburban Washington, D.C., including "The Turnaround," "The Night Gardener" and "Hard Revolution." He has produced feature films and recently was a producer, writer and story editor for HBO's "The Wire."
The Friends of the White Oak Library is sponsoring Pelecanos' appearance. The group will offer "The Way Home" and some of his other books for sale. Pelecanos will answer questions and sign books. For more information, call the library at 240-773-9555.

Tap dancing extravaganza
Tappers With Attitude youth ensemble will take the stage for the 18th Anniversary Concert, "Tap Into the Energy," beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St. Northeast, Washington, D.C.
Special guests include classical guitarist and recording artist Myrna Sislen, as well as the 3jazz Trio and vocalist Dana Bynum.
