Softball team winds up for fundraiser
The 10U Winfield Sting team is headed to the United States Specialty Sports Association Youth Fast Pitch East Region World Series in Salisbury in July, and is fundraising to cover some of the costs of the tournament.
The team, comprised mostly of 9- and 10-year-olds from the Mount Airy area, are part of a travel team that plays in the Central Maryland League. The event is a tournament type of event that lasts five days, requiring hotels, meals and tournament fees.
A family friendly bull roast and silent auction will be held 5-10 p.m. Saturday at the VFW Molleville Farm Post 467 in the upstairs hall at 519 Poole Road in Westminster.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for kids 12 years old and under. The meal includes pit beef, pulled pork and pit turkey, coleslaw, macaroni salad and bottled water or soda. The food is provided by War Pigs barbecue. The cash bar will offer mixed drinks for $3 and beer for $2.
Karen Ruckel, the mom of one of the team members, said the team has been selling tickets in advance, but there will be additional tickets at the door. "We added plenty of extra for those last minute ticket-buyers," she said in an e-mail.
There will be a bake sale, 50/50 raffle, silent auction, prize raffles and music by No Tell Motel, a southern rock group.
