Eleven Rockville residents picked up election packets
Two have announced their candidacy in council race; others still exploring
With voting day five months away, election season has started in earnest in Rockville.
Eleven people have picked up the packets of paperwork required to run for mayor or council and one has picked up both. Picking up a packet does not mean the resident will become a candidate.
Mayor Susan R. Hoffmann and Councilwoman Phyllis Marcuccio picked up packets for mayor. Marcuccio also took a council packet.
Anne M. Robbins is the only other serving member of the council to have picked up a packet as of Tuesday; however, candidates have until Sept. 4 to file.
Eligible candidates for the mayoral and four council seats must be at least 18 years old, registered voters and have resided in Rockville for one year preceding the election.
Candidates must be nominated by a petition of 100 voters registered in the city, which must be submitted to the Board of Supervisors of Elections by the September filing deadline.
Mark Pierzchala, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor against Hoffmann in 2007, and East Rockville resident and political newcomer Craig Trapper Martin, have announced their intentions to run for a seat on the council in November.
The other potential candidates who picked up council packets are Historic District Commission chairman Max van Balgooy, West End resident Frank Anastasi, former council candidates Carl Henn and Theodric "Theo" Anderson, and members of the city Compensation Commission Thomas Moore and Virginia Onley.
Election Day is Nov. 3.
