Clarksburg farmers' market opening for the season
The Clarksburg Town Center Farmers' Market will open for the season Sunday.
The market will feature fresh fruits and vegetables as well as other food products, including eggs, honey and baked goods 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday throughout the summer and fall.
Special festivities are planned for opening day, including live entertainment featuring the Jimmy Purdum Band, children's activities and an artists' showcase.
Local Clarksburg farmers Summer Creek Farm and Abundance Grace Farm, as well as Brookfield Farm/Farm Fresh Chef from Potomac and Moxley Farm in Damascus will be featured throughout the season.
The market's Fresh Give! program will also kick off Sunday, buying produce left at the end of the day to donated through the Manna Food Center to families in need.
Rock and Roll benefit
Studio Music is hosting a Rock'n Blues barbecue Saturday at the Damascus Community Recreation Center, 25520 Oak Drive, to benefit the Damascus Heritage Society's museum project.
The day will begin at noon and run until 5:30 p.m. It will feature two bands — "Second Wind Bandits" and "Rags."
The music is free, barbecue, drinks and T-shirts will be on sale.
Youth rally at St. Paul's
St. Paul Catholic Church in Damascus will hold a youth rally, "Shine Like the Son," from noon to 4 p.m. June 13 on the church grounds, 9240 Damascus Road.
The rally is open to teens of all faiths going into the eighth grade through graduating high school seniors. The cost per person is $20.
The youth rally will celebrate the Year of St. Paul (June 2008 to June 2009), declared by Pope Benedict XVI. A moonbounce, Iron Man inflatable, Velcro wall, rock-climbing wall, competitions between youth groups and live music performed by local church bands will be a part of the festivities for the day.
The fee includes a barbecue lunch and a Year of St. Paul T-shirt.

DTC holding concert,
ice cream social
The Damascus Theatre Company is planning an afternoon of entertainment June 13 to raise money for the local performing arts company.
The fun will start with a concert from 3 to 4:30 p.m. featuring music from shows the company might like to stage in the future. From 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., the event will feature a silent auction, face painting and free balloons and ice cream.
Tickets are $8 per person.

Lions debut in National Memorial Day Parade
On May 25, Damascus Lions Club members Marcia and John Holpuch joined Navy Lt. Dr. Andy Baldwin and Olympic Gold Medalist gymnast Dominique Dawes on the Lions Clubs float in the Washington, D.C., National Memorial Day Parade.
"It was a heartfelt experience to be able to commemorate the brave and my sons, Lions John and Nick Holpuch who have served our wonderful country," Marcia Holpuch said.
This is the first time Lions clubs have appeared in the parade.
Dance recital set for Sunday
Students at Dance with DeAnne will hold their annual spring dance recital at 7 p.m. Sunday at Clarksburg High School, 22500 Wims Road.
The theme this year is dancing ocean adventures, with island dwellers, underwater animals, ships and pirates. The show will feature children ages 3 to 18 years in ballet, tap and jazz.
Tickets are $10 and will be sold at the door.

Golf outing set for June 22
Thor Teams will hold its third annual golf outing June 22 at Little Bennett Golf Course in Clarksburg.
Thor Teams Inc. is a nonprofit group that provides free mentoring, tutoring and team building to students of the Damascus area who experience a financial hardship.
The students begin Thor Teams in grade six at Baker Middle School and are expected to continue the program until they graduate from high school.
Thor Teams was started in 2006 and named after Al Thormeyer, the beloved late Damascus Elementary School principal. It began operations in September 2007 with eight students and currently has 26 in grades six, seven and eight. It plans to add 15 more students in July.
Corporate sponsors as well as players are needed. Cost is $100 per golfer. Sponsorships are available.

On campus
-Aubrey L. Hillman graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science and Bachelor of Arts degree in ancient studies from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
She was a Gates Cambridge finalist, a Marshall Scholar nominee and was named Outstanding Senior for 2009 in both the Department of Geography and Environmental Systems and the Department of Ancient Studies. Hillman, a 2005 graduate of Damascus High School, is the daughter of Leslie and Dave Hillman of Damascus. She will be attending the University of Pittsburgh on a full scholarship in the fall to pursue a doctorate in geology.
-Jillian Osburn received a bachelor's degree in engineering with a major in chemical engineering and a minor in biochemical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. Osburn, a 2005 graduate of Damascus High School, is the daughter of Lorna Tonn of Gaithersburg. She will be pursuing a master's degree in the fall.
-Michele Tyler Abbaticchio was named to the Dean's List for the spring semester at the College of Charleston. Full-time students are named to the list for achieving a grade point average of at least 3.8. Abbaticchio, the daughter of Mike and Krista Abbaticchio of Clarksburg, is a graduate of Poolesville High School.
-Bonnie Dux, a junior at the University of Maryland in College Park, has been inducted into Chapter 22 of Phi Kappa Phi. Dux also earned her Scholars citation in Advocates for Children and is pursuing a degree in elementary education. She is a 2006 graduate of Damascus High School and the daughter of Joan Dux of Gaithersburg and William Dux of Damascus.
Serving the community
Former Damascus resident Sabrina Frances Deeley, a junior at St. James High School in Murrells Inlet, S.C., has been chosen as a delegate to attend Palmetto Girls State.
The delegates, who are rising seniors in high school, are selected based on the leadership skills and involvement they have shown in their respective schools and communities.
Deeley has more than 100 volunteer service hours with Fostering Hope. She got involved with the program under the leadership of Al Stein, former principal of Rocky Hill Middle School, who lives in South Carolina. She was recently elected by her peers and the faculty at St. James High School to serve as the student body president for her upcoming year.
Deeley is the daughter of Maureen Bladen of Murrells Inlet and John Deeley Jr. of Damascus.
