Students travel to National Science Fair
Six Montgomery County students were awarded all-expenses-paid trips to the 2010 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair May 9-14 in San Jose, Calif., by ScienceMONTGOMERY, the Montgomery County Science Fair.
While there the students competed against young scientists from more than 50 countries and came home with additional accolades.
Samirkumar Devalaraja of Rockville, a senior at Thomas S. Wootton High School competing in Medicine and Health won third place in grand awards and second awards from both the Ashtavadhani Vidwan Ambati Subbaraya Chetty Foundation and the Endocrine Society.
Jacob Hurwitz of Rockville, a senior at Montgomery Blair High School competing in Mathematical Sciences won fourth in grand awards plus third award from the American Mathematical Society and a renewable scholarship to IIT College in Arts and Letters at Illinois Institute of Technology.
Rachael Lee of Bethesda, a senior at Walt Whitman High School competing in Cellular Biology, received an award from the Endocrine Society.
Nivetita Ravi of Clarksburg, a freshman at Clarksburg High School competed in Chemistry.
Jennifer Wang of Boyds, a senior at Montgomery Blair High School, and Grace Young of Bethesda, a junior at Potomac School in McLean, competed as a team in Physics and Astronomy. They received third in grand awards and awards from the United States Army and the European Organization for Nuclear Research-CERN. Their winnings included a one-week, all expenses-paid trip to Switzerland to tour CERN, the Large Hadron Collider.
Hornets offer physicals
The Swarmin' Hornet football team will host its second annual Physical Day Fundraiser, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Damascus High School, 25921 Ridge Road.
All DHS athletes are invited to attend for their annual physicals and to have physicians complete the health assessment forms required of student athletes by MCPS. Doctors and nurses will volunteer their time and expertise to make certain athletes are medically cleared for sports and to help the team meet its fundraising needs.
The cost of the physical is $40 per player and $30 for each additional player of the same family. Health assessment forms completed at Physical Day will last for the entire 2010-2011 school year.

National Merit
Scholarship winners
Fifteen students have been named in the first round of college-sponsored National Merit scholarships. The students are among 35 winners in Maryland. So far this year, 42 students in Montgomery County public schools have been named Merit Scholars.
The winners, scholarship sponsors and their intended career fields are:
-Montgomery Blair High School: Jeremy E. Fallick, University of Maryland, computer science; Timothy C. Lee, University of Maryland, electrical engineering; Scott A. Zimmermann, University of Maryland, computer science; Victoria Lai, University of Maryland, computer science/law; Andrea Y. Ng, University of Maryland, computer science; Elaine Lin, University of Maryland, mechanical engineering; Meredith H. Metcalf, Emory University, entertainment; and Joseph R. Owen, University of Maryland, computer science.
-Winston Churchill High School: Brett G. Mead, Washington University in St. Louis, law; and Brian C. Sun, University of Maryland, theater/performing arts.
-Walter Johnson High School: Jane C. Hillenbrand, University of Rochester, physical science; and Spencer K. Ollayos, University of Maryland, medicine.
-Richard Montgomery High School: Andrew I. Yu, University of Maryland, engineering.
-Seneca Valley High School: Joseph R. Burns, Georgia Institute of Technology, nuclear engineering.
-Thomas S. Wootton High School: Hubert M. Shiau, University of Maryland, accounting/information systems.
Global Citizen Scholarship recipient
Melissa Yang of Clarksburg, a junior in the International Baccalaureate program at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, was named a Global Citizen Scholarship recipient by EF Educational Tours.
Yang was one of 20 winners chosen from the United States and India who will travel on a 10-day, expenses-paid EF Educational Tour to China.
EF's Global Citizen Scholarship encourages high school sophomores and juniors to think about their roles in their local and global communities and consider how their actions affect the people around them and around the world.
Applicants submitted a 1,500-word essay on the importance of cross-cultural exchange and the value of spending time in China.
2010 Horatio Alger
National Scholars
Chana T. Zaks of Silver Spring, a student at the Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy, and Diana A. Nguyen of Silver Spring, at student at Montgomery Blair High School, have been named Horatio Alger National Scholars, which provides a $20,000 scholarship to a four-year college or university of their choice.
To qualify for the award students submitted essays describing challenges or adversities they overcame to make a better life for themselves. The students also hold leadership positions in their schools and participate in communities service activities.
Six county students won Horatio Alger State Scholarships and will receive $2,500 to assist in funding their college education. Those students are:
-James Dalrymple of Seneca Valley High School;
-Maggie Fung, Richer Tan and Suejane Tan of Montgomery Blair High School;
-Mark Lee of Walt Whitman High School and
-Rebecca Sum of Albert Einstein High School
