North Brentwood-based group honors volunteers
North Brentwood-based nonprofit Neighborhood Design Center held an awards ceremony May 20 to honor volunteers and community clients who helped with community revitalization projects in Prince George's County.
The 2009 volunteers of the year are Sarah Hedlund and Courtney Galiber of Morris & Ritchie Associates in Laurel. The pair worked on the three-year Hamilton Streetscape and Artwalk Project in Hyattsville. The 2009 project of the year was the Central Kenilworth Avenue Revitalization Study in which NDC worked with groups in Templeton Knolls as well as the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, the Town of Riverdale Park and the University of Maryland, College Park, Landscape Architecture Program.
The celebration was held in Magruder Park in Hyattsville. NDC gives professional design and planning services to nonprofit groups through pro-bono services from area architects, planners and designers.
Brentwood hosting budget meeting tonight
The Town of Brentwood's mayor and Town Council are holding a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. tonight to discuss and vote upon the fiscal 2010 budget. Resident and business comments are welcomed at the meeting, which will be held at Brentwood Town Hall, 4300 39th Place.

Enjoy a day out with your dog
The City of Hyattsville and the Lively Arts in Hyattsville group are hosting "Dogs for the Arts" at 9:30 a.m. June 6.
All residents and their dogs are invited for a day of paw painting, dog tricks, owner-dog lookalike contests and other activities. The event will be at Magruder Park, located at the intersection of 40th Avenue and Hamilton Street.
All dogs must be on a leash, and dog owners under 16 have to be accompanied by an adult. Call 301-699-5440 to register dogs for the activities.
Hyattsville celebrates
ArtSpin event
ArtSpin 2009 kicks off with an opening reception at 6 p.m. June 6 at the University Town Center: Lofts 22 on 6525 Belcrest Road.
The annual event will feature live music, fine arts exhibition, auctions, wine and beer tasting and discounted rates at local restaurants. Jazz musicians Julie Hall and Fred Foss will each perform during the reception, which ends at 10 p.m. Artwork will remain on display during gallery hours until July 17.

Bladensburg High student receives scholarship
The Prince George's Elected Municipal Women awarded one of three annual scholarships to a Bladensburg High School student.
Jennifer Oyedele will be given the $500 scholarship at the June 13 annual PGEMW meeting. The scholarship, meant to assist students with college, was also awarded to a Central Senior High School and a Suitland High School student.
Hyattsville couple collecting donations for wounded veterans
A local couple is collecting donations for summer weekly deliveries to the amputee ward at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
The McGehees of Hyattsville have been making the donation runs for four years. They are looking for donations of cookies, candy and donuts for wounded veterans and their families. Call Milton McGehee at 301-559-0864.

nonprofit honored
The Human Services Coalition of Prince George's County awarded a Riverdale-based nonprofit organization as the Outstanding Emerging Nonprofit Organization during a May 13 ceremony.
Family Matters Empowerment Center was established by certified marriage counselors Freddie and Marjorie Grays. The group teaches parents healthy relationship skills in order to strengthen families. They are currently seeking volunteers with skills in fundraising, organizational development, accounting and grant-writing.

Local Junior ROTC
students promoted
St. John's College High School in Northwest Washington, D.C., promoted five Prince George's County students May 14 during its annual Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps Federal Inspection and Commissioning ceremony.
Jon Williams of Hyattsville was promoted to lieutenant colonel. Lebona Hailu of Brentwood and Cedreic Watson of Riverdale were both promoted to the rank of first lieutenant. All of the students are juniors.
Overall, five lieutenant colonels, eight majors, 17 captains, 10 first lieutenants and 12 second lieutenants were promoted.
Bladensburg Elementary
career day a hit
Bladensburg Elementary School held their annual career day May 15 and had several special visitors. Philip W. Broome, a Tuskegee Airman, visited the school and spoke to students. Other visitors included a lawyer, plumber, nurse, cosmetologist, doctors, park ranger, bus drivers, mail carriers, teachers and career counselors from Prince George's Community College and Bowie State University.
Cottage City promotes officer
The Cottage City Police Department recently promoted David Young. Young served as an officer and was promoted this month to the rank of sergeant.
Hyattsville-based youth orchestra performs at Kennedy Center
The Hyattsville-based Positive Vibrations Youth Steel Orchestra is scheduled to perform Monday at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
The group will perform on the Millennium Stage at 6 p.m., in honor of Caribbean Heritage Month. The show is free to the public. The center is at 2700 F St. N.W.

Brentwood Day organizers looking for volunteers
Brentwood Day 2009 is fast approaching, and organizers are looking for volunteers to participate in the town parade and vendors to sell food and crafts for the flea market.
The celebration is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 6 at Bartlett Park at 4300 39th Street. There will be carnival rides, roller skating, music and food for the rain-or-shine event.
