Franchot asks big oil to explain pricing

Comptroller Peter V.R. Franchot is asking oil companies to explain how they set zone pricing and asking state inspectors to take gasoline storage tank temperatures in an effort to make sure customers are getting a fair shake at the pump.

Franchot (D) is set to announce his plans at today in Bethesda.

Weights and measures inspectors will be checking to see that underground tanks are 60 degrees or cooler. That’s because liquid gasoline expands at temperatures higher than 60 degrees and customers may be getting less than they expect in a gallon if the fuel is not cool, said Joseph Shapiro, a Franchot spokesman.

The comptroller is also calling for renewing a tax credit for buying a hybrid vehicle.

The comptroller’s Web site will add a search engine for locating stations where prices are lowest and a form for filing complaints online.
