Prince George's County has five winners at state track meet
Athletes dominate field events, tie state record on way to five first-place finishes Friday
There is still one day to go in the Maryland state track and field championships, but Prince George's County already has made its mark on the meet. County 4A League athletes captured five first-place finishes and tied a state record in competition Friday at Morgan State University in Baltimore.
Charles H. Flowers High senior Dwayne Powell got the state title wins started, as he finished first in the 4A boys' long jump with a lunge of 23 feet, 3 inches.
Shortly after that, the Jaguars' 3,200-meter relay team of Garland Brooks, Troy Browne, Mike Rowland and George Empty won the event with a time of 7 minutes, 54.60 seconds.
"I didn't expect for them to win but we did expect to run a good time anyway," said Flowers coach Carl Rose.
Bowie High sophomore Jerimiah Hendy surprised many by winning the boys' 4A high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches, the best of his career.
"It's great, we got him to come through in the region, and I'm proud he came through here," Bowie coach Rich Andrulonis said of Hendy. "He's a super-athlete."
Meanwhile, Oxon Hill junior Evann Slaughter won the girls' triple jump, going 38-4.5, while her teammate Taylor Butler finished second (37-10.5).
Eleanor Roosevelt's girls continued their tear this season, as the team of Abi Adenikinju, Jenea McCammon, Auriyall Scott and Afia Charles tied the state 800-meter relay record of 1:37.41. The mark was established in 2006 by Roosevelt's team of Doris Anyanwu, Elan Hilaire, Takecia Jameson and Tameka Jameson. The county swept the top four spots in the 4A girls' 800 relay, as Oxon Hill finished second (1:40.52), Flowers third (1:41.29) and Suitland fourth (1:43.31).
The Roosevelt girls' 3,200 relay team of Tyreka Arrington, Sekinat Ekiyoyo, Danielle Calhoun and Amirah Johnson finished third (9:35.32). Roosevelt's Juanita Weaver finished third in the girls' discus (106-2), while Flowers' Brelyn Finley finished fourth (104-2).
The Bowie boys' 800 relay team of Daniel Ballah, Emanuel Noumossie, Collins Manning and Anthony Simpson finished third (1:20.77).
Entering the final day of competition today, Oxon Hill leads the girls' Class 4A standings with 26 points, followed by Roosevelt (tied with Wootton at 20 points). The Flowers boys are in second place in Class 4A (22 points).
