Preliminary work has begun to prepare the area where buses will be relocated while the Silver Spring Transit Center is constructed at the site of the current Silver Spring Metro station.

Late this summer, all of the Metrobus and Ride On buses that are currently using the Metro station will instead stop along Wayne Avenue, Dixon Avenue and Bonifant Street until construction on the transit center is finished.

Improvements are being made in the area to accommodate the relocated buses. There will be informational signs to help people locate their bus stops and connections.

The center, which has a $75 million price tag, should open in the fall of 2009. It will bring together Metrorail, Metrobus, Ride On, MARC train and inter-city bus services in one facility. There also will be a residential, retail and hotel component.

The Silver Spring Advisory Board and Presidents’ Council of Silver Spring Civic Associations will hold a Capital Improvement Program forum 7 p.m. June 13 at the Round House Theatre Education Center, 925 Wayne Ave. The purpose of the forum is to discuss projects that could be included in the county’s fiscal 2009-2014 capital improvements budget. These projects could include transportation, recreation, libraries and other improvements to the community.
