Adventist HealthCare recognizes those who provide to underserved

Adventist HealthCare presented its inaugural Community Partnership Award to six community partners in honor of their service to the underserved. The inaugural award was presented to Father Valentine Keveny of St. Mary’s Rectory, Montgomery Hospice, MobileMed, Casa of Maryland, the Jewish Social Service Agency and The People’s Community Baptist Church at a special prayer breakfast held May 14 during Adventist HealthCare’s annual spring conference.

Discovery to closeretail outlets

Discovery Communications of Silver Spring is closing its 103 stand-alone and mall-based retail stores by the end of September.

Roughly 1,000 full- and part-time employees — about 25 percent of the company’s workforce — will be affected, the company said in a statement. Discovery plans to market its merchandise through licensing partnerships with other retailers and develop its online sales.

Learning centerowner among Impact award winners

Richard Crump, who in 1998 opened the Quality Time Early Learning Center for children in downtown Silver Spring, has been named winner of the 2007 Impact Silver Spring Explorer Award. Impact Silver Spring is a nonprofit organization that annually honors those working with ‘‘spirit and vision” to enhance the community.

Others who received awards were Emie Mercier-Cadet, resident leader of the Northwest Park Apartment Community; Richard Crump, president of Quality Time Early Learning Center; Lene and Abeba Tsegaye, owners of Kefa Café; and Tom Block and Amy Kincaid of Space 7:10.

Wealth-building andhomeownership forum

A ‘‘Wealth-Building and Homeownership Forum” offered by the Bethesda-based Association of African American Financial Advisors, in conjunction with the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Homeownership Initiative, and the Peoples Community Baptist Church Social Action Ministry, will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 23 at PCBC Community Center, 31 Norwood Road, Silver Spring.

The event is part of AAAA’s Smarter Mortgage Money Initiative, a series of financial literacy and homeownership seminars that began in 2005.

Accountants holdgolf tournament

The Maryland Society of Accountants, a nonprofit organization, will host its 2007 Maryland Society of Accountants Scholarship Foundation Golf Tournament on June 12 at Maryland National Golf Course, 8836 Hollow Road, Middletown. This event is open to the public. Check-in begins 8 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The scholarship program awards exceptional accounting students who are Maryland residents enrolled in Maryland universities, colleges or community colleges.

Register by June 7 at www.msacct.org. Cost is $110 per person. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. A putting contest is also available to participants of the golf tournament at $20 per person. First place in the putting contest wins one third of the putting contest proceeds. Contestants in the putting contest also have the chance of winning a free round of golf.
