Altoona pitcher downs 16 straight batters, shuts down Baysox
First-round draft pick Brad Lincoln tosses two-hitter Thursday to beat Bowie, 2-0
The Bowie Baysox spent Thursday night finding out what made Brad Lincoln a first-round draft pick.
Lincoln, taken fourth overall in the 2006 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, tossed a two-hitter to lead the Altoona Curve to a 2-0 victory against the Baysox in the final game of a three-game set at Prince George's Stadium.
Lincoln struck out four, walked two and faced one batter over the minimum. He retired 13 Baysox in less than three pitches, and after the second inning, the Altoona right-hander put down 16 consecutive Baysox hitters until a walk to Ambiorix Concepcion in the bottom of the eighth inning. Lincoln responded by inducing a double-play.
"Him being 92-96 [miles per hour] for nine innings and spotting in and out is going to be tough," first baseman Brandon Snyder said of Lincoln. "Plus he was throwing his breaking ball for strikes."
Snyder, the Baysox leading hitter (.353), went hitless for the second night in a row. Jason Delaney knocked in both runs for Altoona. Concepcion and Brandon Pinckney had the only hits for Bowie. Pinckney was playing his first game with Bowie after joining the club on Thursday. The veteran infielder is in his seventh minor league season. He spent last year as a Baysox opponent, hitting .280 with six homers and 36 RBI in 90 games for the Akron Aeros.
The Baysox finished their eight-game homestand with a record of 6-2. They open a four-game series in Harrisburg on Friday. Right-hander Jake Arrieta (4-1, 2.70 ERA) looks to earn his team-leading fifth win against Harrisburg righty Luis Atilano (2-3, 6.52).
