Sykesville resident joins community college as deanCongratulations to Michael J. Kiphart of Sykesville who joined Carroll Community College as dean of Student Affairs, a newly created position at the college. Kiphart has 23 years of experience in higher education accreditation, teaching, curriculum development, administration, planning and policy development, according to a Carroll Community College press release. ‘‘As an advocate for higher education and for quality academic improvements and programs, I have worked with many agencies, institutions, and statewide committees and taskforces to initiate programs,” Kiphart states in the release. ‘‘Such programs have encouraged higher education institutions to move in new and different directions that enhance existing campus initiatives, services, and education for students. ‘‘I am excited about assuming this position,” he said. ‘‘I know the Maryland higher education system very well. I have always appreciated the efforts and accomplishments of the leadership, administration, and faculty at Carroll.” Prior to joining Carroll, Kiphart was vice president of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Kiphart has a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in psychology and a doctorate in psychology, each from Colorado State University. Reading contest winner Zachary Molin, a sixth-grade student in Linda Snead’s Reading and Language Arts class at Sykesville Middle School, was one of three statewide winners of the Radical Readers - Read Across America Contest. Students read 10 books and wrote three essay answers about each book. They were asked what they liked or disliked most about the book, whether they would recommend the book to a friend and why or why not, and how they would describe their favorite character or chapter. Nearly 200 entries were received for the contest in which Zach received a laptop computer for his effort. The Maryland State Teachers Association and Staples sponsored the contest. Principal Tom Eckenrode, Snead and Zach’s class were invited to attend the award presentation on April 21 at the Banneker-Douglass Museum in Annapolis. Zach’s mother, Lorraine Molin, and a parent volunteer, Janet Debinski, also attended. The group toured the museum, had a pizza lunch and videotaped a skit on ‘‘What’s So Radical About Reading?” Kids walk The fourth annual Relay For Life of the Freedom Area will feature a kids walk for children ages infant to 12 years at 4 p.m. June 7 on the Sykesville-Freedom District Volunteer Fire Department grounds. Activities geared toward children will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. and the carnival-like atmosphere will feature appearances by Keyote, the Frederick Keys mascot and the Century and Liberty high school mascots. Stitch the Clown, Tristar Martial Arts, Kangaroo Kids (a jump-rope team), Sykesville Tae Kwon Do and SRCS Dance Squad will provide entertainment. Participants include families, friends, coworkers, medical professionals, students, church members, businesses and corporations and community members—anyone whose life has been touched by cancer.
