William Wirt students recognized for achievements
Students at William Wirt Middle School in Riverdale made notable achievements this spring. Mercury Lazo won first place in the school-wide spelling bee.
Three students also placed in the Prince George's County Schools' Young Authors Contest. Anne Margjoe Santos won the seventh grade short story contest for her short story "TV Nightmare Story." Lauren Lattin won the eighth grade short story contest for her story "Las Solas." Daquan Williams won the eighth grade poetry contest for his poem "Rain." The three winners attended an awards ceremony May 2.
Mount Rainier native graduates from Cornell University
A Mount Rainier native will graduate Sunday from Cornell University. Emma Ong'ayo Osore finished Cornell with a bachelor's degree in urban and regional studies.
DeMatha alumnus graduates from Air Force training
Franklin A. Mills, a 2006 graduate of DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Mills spent eight weeks training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. He earned four credits toward an associate's degree in applied science from the Community College of the Air Force.
Mills is the son of New Carrollton resident Cynthia Mills.
Edmonston councilwoman named coach of the year
The Archdiocese of Washington named Edmonston Town Councilwoman Elizabeth McCauley (Ward 2) the coach of the year.
McCauley has coached all ages in softball, basketball and soccer at Holy Redeemer in College Park. She currently coaches seventh and eighth graders.
"With or without an award, I've been doing it for over 20 years and I just love coaching," she said. "I love sports and I've got four children of my own, from 13 to 30, and coaching them and coaching other kids, I guess it keeps them busy and keeps them active and keeps them out of trouble."

Approaching Brentwood Day looking for volunteers
Brentwood Day 2009 is fast approaching and organizers are looking for volunteers to participate in the town parade and vendors to sell food and crafts for the flea market.
The celebration is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 6 at Bartlett Park at 4300 39th St. There will be carnival rides, roller skating, music and food for the rain-or-shine event. Peace Day Parade at
Mount Rainier Elementary
Mount Rainier Elementary School students will participate in the school's 13th annual Peace Day Parade June 12. The parade commemorates the 160 days students spent thinking of alternative ways to solve problems other than fighting. Local elected officials and the Northwestern High School Band will participate in the parade.
Bridges undergo
cleaning and painting
Last week, the State Highway Administration began a $1.4 million project to clean and paint eight bridges in Prince George's County using funds from the 2009 stimulus package.
The bridges are at: Kenilworth Avenue over Annapolis Road in Bladensburg; Kenilworth Avenue over John Hanson Highway in Cheverly; Landover Road over Martin Luther King, Jr. Highway in Landover; Powder Mill Road over the CSX Railroad in Beltsville; Riggs Road over Sligo Creek in Chillum; Queens Chapel Road over Northwest Branch in Hyattsville; and Baltimore Avenue over Paint Branch and a bike path in College Park.
Drivers may experience single lane closures and minimal delays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and possibly double lane closures 8 p.m. through 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.
Crew workers will strip and repaint the steel beams and bridge structures. The project will finish in summer 2010, weather permitting.
According to an SHA press release, the bridges are structurally safe, but the project is necessary to extend the lives of the bridges.
Alumni fraternity chapter recognizes student achievement

Hyattsville Middle participates in state music festival
Hyattsville Middle School's band, chorus and orchestra participated in a Maryland music festival. The orchestra and band were ranked "superior" by the state, and the chorus was given scores of one by all of the judges.

Beltsville resident chosen
for science academy
Kayla Moffett, 13, of Beltsville, has been selected to attend the 2009 National Junior Leaders Conference's Discover Medicine and Science program, held June 26 to July 3 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
The six-day conference is for exceptional students interested in medicine. Kayla hopes to one day become a pediatrician, according to her mother, Maureen Moffett.
Kayla, a seventh-grader at Lanham Christian School in Lanham, will learn about disease transmission, patient diagnosis and skeletal anatomy at the conference, which will also include social events and field trips to local attractions.

hosts pot luck in the park
The Berwyn District Civic Association will have an outdoor pot luck dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 29 at the Berwyn Neighborhood Park in College Park.
Participants are asked to bring a prepared dish and recipe to the park and arrive between 6 and 6:15 p.m. Organizers will provide drinks and eating utensils.

College Park plans
Memorial Day service
The city of College Park will host a Memorial Day observance Monday at the Veterans Memorial in College Park.
The service will begin at 11 a.m. and last for about one hour. It will include a laying of wreaths, color guard ceremonies, orations and musical selections.

UM welcomes distinguished musicians, faculty
The University of Maryland, College Park's National Orchestral Institute will kick off a month of performances with a faculty chamber music recital June 4 at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center in College Park.
Each year, the National Orchestral Institute program brings over 80 of the nation's best undergraduate and graduate student musicians to the College Park campus for a four-week teaching program.
The June 4 faculty recital will begin at 8 p.m. and admission is free. It will be the first of eight public performances during the program, which runs from May 30 to June 28.
The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center is located on the university campus.

Community college to host 50th commencement
Prince George's Community College in Largo will host its 50th commencement at 7 p.m. tonight at The Show Place Arena at 14900 Pennsylvania Ave. in Upper Marlboro.
This year's commencement speaker is U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Dist. 4) of Fort Washington.
More than 800 students are expected to graduate with associate degrees, certificates and letters of recognition.
Lanham hospital introduces stroke survivors support group
The Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham will introduce a support group June 10 for stroke survivors and caregivers to promote optimism, resilience, determination and independence.
The program features a presentation, question-and-answer session and an open discussion.
The group will meet for lunch at noon in the hospital cafeteria, followed by a 1 p.m. meeting in the DSE room on the fifth floor of the Medical Office Building at Doctors Community Hospital at 8118 Good Luck Road in Lanham.
