Stop-smoking project extended

The Legacy Lung Screening and Smoking Cessation Project, a research study sponsored by Weill Medical College of Cornell University and hosted by the Cancer Institute at Holy Cross Hospital, has been extended to include two evening times – 6 p.m. Thursday and June 5. Participants must be current smokers, at least 50 years old, in good health, have not had a chest CT in the past three years, and have a personal physician. Call 301-754-8800 for more information. Square dance demoat City Place

A square dance demonstration in honor of ‘‘Older Americans Month” will be held 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. today at City Place Mall. Colesville StrawberryFestival coming

The 25th annual Colesville Strawberry Festival will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 31 on the grounds of the old Colesville School at the corner of Hobbs Drive and New Hampshire Avenue.

Entertainment will be provided by students from area schools, children’s games will be available and all profits will be donated to the C-4 clothes closet and food pantry. Strawberries, hot dogs and ice cream will be available.

Speeches on development and ‘going green’

As part of the Montgomery County Planning Board’s Expert Speaker Series, Bernadette Hanlon, research analyst at the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education of University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will give a speech on urban and suburban development 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Park and Planning headquarters, 8787 Georgia Ave.

Hanlon is a doctoral candidate in public policy and holds two master’s degrees in policy sciences and in philosophy. The speech will be presented to the Montgomery County Planning Board and is open to the public. Call 301-495-4600.

As part of the speaker series, the Planning Board will host a series of free educational programs on green home design and landscaping as part of Park and Planning’s Going Green at Home program. Nonprofit seeks funds to ship medical supplies

Network for Humanity, a nonprofit charity headed by Burtonsville resident Craig Atenidegbe, has collected supplies donated by area hospitals, churches and medical providers to bring to needy patients in Nigeria. The country has a high concentration of residents with the HIV⁄AIDS virus.

The organization has formed a partnership with two Nigerian hospitals but needs to raise funds to ship the supplies.

Lunch to support local moms

Moms Inc. of Silver Spring, which supports the needs of stay-at-home mothers attempting to run at-home businesses, will hold a networking lunch noon to 2 p.m. today at Dream Dinners, 720 Cloverly St. in Silver Spring in the Cloverly Towne Center at the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Briggs Chaney Road. Yard sales tobenefit nonprofit

Yard sales will be held at the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month. The sales will take place in the parking lot of the center, located at 3300 Briggs Chaney Road, Silver Spring.

Rates are $10 for one space, $15 for two and $25 for three or four spaces.

Proceeds will be donated to The Eastern Montgomery Emergency Assistance Network, which provides assistance for housing, utilities and prescription medication expenses.

Northwood High seeks alumni to mark reopening

Northwood High School in Silver Spring is commemorating the first graduation at the school since the site reopened in 2004 with a celebration that will honor alumni from the years it originally opened.

Administrators hope the graduation ceremony, ‘‘Continuing the Legacy,” will include alumni from each of the graduating classes between 1959 and 1977, but they are still looking for alumni to represent the following years: 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969 and 1977.

Workplace attiresought for women

Donations of professional clothing for women are being collected between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays at the Eastern Montgomery Regional Services Center, 3300 Briggs Chaney Road, Silver Spring, for the center’s Wonderful Opportunities for Women shopping spree to be held in April.

Women in the program are getting back into the workforce after being victims of poverty, domestic violence or abuse, according to a news release from Montgomery County Government. The clothing is meant to bolster the women’s confidence and self-esteem.

Organizers ask that suits, blouses, shoes and accessories be cleaned, on hangers and ready to wear. For information about the program, call 240-777-8400.

The East County Citizens Advisory Board is seeking community input to determine topics for its next several community forums. The forums focus on a specific issue in eastern Montgomery County, informing citizens while also giving them the chance to speak with government and county officials. Volunteer firefighters wanted

The Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Department is offering live-in opportunities at its firehouse, 13900 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville. The station receives more than 5,000 emergency calls annually and offers dormitory-style housing as well as tuition reimbursement for college students.

Volunteers soughtfor blood collection

The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers age 14 and older to assists its blood collection staff at blood drives and blood donor centers. Specific responsibilities include greeting donors and providing them with essential reading materials, serving refreshments, and observing donors for post-donation reactions to giving blood.

Volunteer withMeals on Wheels

Colesville Meals on Wheels needs volunteers to deliver meals to the homebound in Burtonsville, Woodmoor, Four Corners, Burnt Mills, White Oak, Colesville and Calverton.

Meals are delivered 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. five days a week except when schools are closed or on major holidays. Commitment can be two hours per week or every other week. Call Sarah Day at 301-384-5735.

Anxiety disorders group

A free self-help group for people with anxiety, panic disorder, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other nervous disorders meets 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Glenmont United Methodist Church, 12901 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring.

The group is run by Recovery Inc., an international organization that advocates for the use of self-help methods along with cognitive therapy. Participants will learn how to manage stress, panic, anxiety, depression, anger, irrational fears, phobias, compulsions, obsessions and other emotional or behavioral problems.
