Frederick Police today released the names of the people involved in a domestic dispute Wednesday in which the husband shot his wife before shooting himself.

According to Lt. Thomas Chase, Scott M. Luty, 32, and Jennifer M. Luty, 32, of West Virginia were arguing Wednesday afternoon on South Bentz Street.

Officer Douglas Stephenson was walking in area, and heard the argument. Stephenson saw the husband was armed with a pistol, and told him to drop the weapon.

Instead of dropping it, Luty shot his wife and fired at Stephenson, who returned fire. The husband then shot himself and died at the scene.

Jennifer Luty was flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma, where she was listed in stable condition this morning, Chase said.

An autopsy revealed that Scott Luty suffered two gunshot wounds: a self-inflicted shot to the head, and one to the chest that was fired by Stephenson.

Frederick County State’s Attorney Scott Rolle will present the case to a grand jury. Stephenson has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

No additional information regarding the incident will be released by the Frederick Police Department until that has occurred.
