Regional track: Largo, Friendly start strong on Thursday
County athletes make significant impact in 2A South and 1A South meets
Regional high school track and field meets got under way across the state on Thursday, and several Prince George's County athletes qualified for the state championships with their performances.
The state meet is set for May 21-23 at Morgan State University. The top four finishers in each event at the regional meets advance to the state event.
In the 3A South Region meet at Westlake High School, Largo's girls' 3,200-meter relay team won the region title (10 minutes, 17.4 seconds), finishing more than a second in front of second-place Huntingtown. The Largo girls also qualified for the state meet in the 800 relay, taking fourth place.
Largo senior Shaunte Boney won the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches. Her teammate, Agnes Conteh, won the triple jump (33-11), while Largo's Robert Figueroa also qualified for the state meet with a fourth-place finish. The Lions continued a solid performance in the field events with junior Charlese Morgan taking third in the discus.
On the boys' side, Largo's 800 relay team took second place. Adewale Ogunsanya will head to the state meet after the senior took third in the shot put.
The 3A South meet continues at 9 a.m. Saturday at Westlake with finals in the sprints and sprint relays and the 800 and 1,600. Friendly is likely to clinch several state meet spots, as Indya Price and Latrese Barker were first and third, respectively in the preliminaries in the girls' 100 meters. Price also had the third-best preliminary time in the 200.
The girls' 100 hurdles will be a battle between several athletes from Friendly and Largo. Boney had the top preliminary time (14.9 seconds), followed by Friendly's Vernetta Biggs and Seneman Burns in second and third place, respectively, and Largo's Ashlee Lindsey in fifth.
Potomac freshman Ronald Darby tied for the third-best preliminary time in the boys' 100 meters (11 seconds). He also was second in the 200 preliminaries, finishing in 22.9 seconds, just one-tenth of a second behind Westlake standout Devon Smith, a Penn State football recruit.
1A South Region
Surrattsville sophomore Andrea Fields won the girls' 100 meters (12.82 seconds) and took third in the 200, where she finished behind first-place Ekundayo Sogbesan of Forestville (26.65). Sogbesan notched a double as she won the 400 (1:00.56).
Forestville's Mya Shelby took fourth in the shot put (28 feet, 2.5 inches). Shelby also was fourth in the discus (86-6).
The Surrattsville boys swept the top three spots in the 100 meters, as Joseph Rollins finished first (11.3) followed by Aurelius Kitchens and Patrick Williams. Kitchens also took third in the 200. With its strong sprinting corps, the Hornets also won the 400-meter relay.
Forestville's Tyler Savoy won the region title in the triple jump (37-2). The Knights' Jeffrey Byers is headed to the state meet in both of the hurdle events, as he took second in the 110 and third in the 300. Jordan Barlow took fourth in the high jump.
2A South Region
Athletes from Fairmont Heights, Gwynn Park, Frederick Douglass and Central competed in the first day of the 2A South Region meet on Friday at Long Reach High in Columbia. The meet continues Saturday at Long Reach.
Fairmont Heights senior James Bowman had the fourth-best preliminary time in the boys' 100 meters (11.65 seconds).
Gwynn Park sophomore Andrew Boseman qualified for the region finals in the 200 meters, notching the seventh-best time out of the eight qualifiers (22.94 seconds).
Frederick Douglass freshman Kyle Smith will enter the finals of the 110-meter hurdles with the fourth-best qualifying time (15.92 seconds). Bowman also qualified for the finals in the 110 hurdles.
On the girls' side, Douglass junior Delainey Price qualified for the finals in the 200, notching the fifth-best preliminary time (27.15 seconds). Douglass junior Gloria Roberts, who swept the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 titles at last week's Prince George's County Championships, took third in the 3,200 at the 2A South Region meet, finishing in 11 minutes, 19.44 seconds.
