Mother Seton School students
walk to help Rwanda
On April 30, Mother Seton School students participated in a spring walkathon. This year, the event raised more than $6,300 for the Daughters of Charity Supplemental and Therapeutic Nutrition Centers in Mukungu, Rwanda.
The centers work to fight malnutrition; workers there provide "well-balanced meals to those in dire need, as well as seeds and gardening supplies to farmers so that they can grow their own food," according to a press release.
Students got pledge donations for each mile they walked around the grounds of the Mother Seton School, The National Fire Academy and the St. Joseph's Provincial House. While pre-kindergarten students could only walk 2 miles and first- and second-graders could only walk 4, the maximum distance allowed for the rest of the age groups was 12 miles, and many students went the full distance, according to the release.

Hendrix also received a congratulatory certificate from Sen. Barbara Mikulski for "her strong commitment and record of achievement in promoting affirmative action, cultural diversity and inclusion within the community."
Hendrix has led the community college's diversity program for 10 years. Her position provides strategic leadership, guidance and overall direction for the college's diversity initiatives and practices.
"I have always believed in the founding principles of this nation that all men are created equal. My work at the college has been to try to increase the diversity of faculty and staff," Hendrix said in the press release. "I and others have tried to change our practices and processes in order to do so.
"We have made cultural competence the focus of our diversity strategic plan. We feel we owe it to each other to behave in ways that are civil and respectful and that appreciate what each one of us brings to the college ridding ourselves of biases and assumptions that prevent some people from achieving at their maximum potential.
