Celebrity treatment at Hoover
Herbert Hoover Middle School teachers and staff enjoyed red carpet treatment during National PTA's annual Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week May 3-7.
Following the theme "Celebrating Our Hoover Stars," parents, under the direction of Janette Gilman, PTA vice president and Staff Appreciation Week chair, provided lunches and treats each day. Each presentation was tied to theme of a popular movie, such as "Rocky" (1976), when pizza, including Philly cheese steak pizza, was served.
A winning history project
Junior Rollin Tschirgi, 16, and freshman Jordan Shusterman, 15, of the School for Tomorrow in Aspen Hill won first place in the senior group category at the Maryland History Day Competition at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, April 24.
They also were awarded a competition-wide prize, the Milt Zaslow Award for Cryptology for Maryland History Day.
In keeping with the theme "Innovation in History," the students built transistor radios and developed their exhibit: "The Transistor: The Beginning of the Modern Information Age." They competed against more than two dozen others in the category and now advance to the June 13-17 Kenneth E. Bering National History Day at the University of Maryland, College Park.
