Glenelg High School ‘Jazz Under the Stars’

The Glenelg High School Jazz Ensemble will present ‘‘Jazz Under the Stars” at 5 p.m. on May 21.
Tickets cost $30 for adults and $15 for children. Children under five are admitted for free.
Tickets are not available at the door; they must be ordered by May 17.
The program includes a catered dinner.

New WindsorMiddle School news
Bob Foster, a motor development teacher for seven Carroll County schools, arranges field trips to his farm in Gettysburg for Learning for Independence students each year. New Windsor Middle School students took a trip on May 9.
The field trip includes a reptile show, caring for farm animals and a motor activity designed to pull together the information the students learned during the day.
This year, Foster taught students about the various clashes that occurred between the north and the south in the Battle of Gettysburg. The class also reenacted a number of the battles using yarn balls as their weapons. The students visited the Gettysburg battlefield for the last part of their trip on May 9 to participate in a yarn ball battle at Culps Hill between the various schools that are a part of the field trip.
Touchdown Club Awards — Carroll County Athletes
The Baltimore Touchdown Club hosted its 9th Annual Super 22 Banquet on April 27 at Michael’s in Glen Burnie Maryland. The Baltimore Touchdown Club is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting high school football in Maryland, particularly in the greater Baltimore metro area. The following football players from Carroll County high schools were honored at the banquet: Dan Cremens, Westminster; John Hopkins, Winters Mill; Brandon Kunert, North Carroll; Nick Hanson, Francis Scott Key; Alex Bechta, Century; Josh Cole, Francis Scott Key; Ryan Pentz, Century; and Roger Yohn, South Carroll. John Seaman, principal of Westminster High School, was named Administrator of the Year. Stanley Chase of Westminster received the Official of the Year Award.

The fourth- and fifth-grade classes will present their spring concert at 7 p.m., May 28, in the Mount Airy Middle School gym. Students are asked to wear dressy clothes; according to school regulations, girls may not wear spaghetti straps, bare midriffs, etc. Skirts must reach the knee. Boys should wear a tie, if possible. Shirts must be plain, with no writing of any kind on them.
Volunteers register now for your volunteer appreciation luncheon to be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., May 31. RSVP by May 19. This luncheon is for adults only and space is limited.

Lions Club scholarships
The Mount Airy Lions Club is offering three $500 scholarships to students in each of the four area high schools: Linganore and Urbana High Schools in Frederick County, South Carroll High School in Carroll County and Glenelg High School in Howard County.The scholarships are available to seniors from the four schools who are furthering their education at a two-year college or a technical school.Students can apply in writing stating their need, qualifications and plans for the future. South CarrollHigh School news
The spring instrumental music concert will be at 7:30 p.m., May 18 at Century High School. The rehearsal will be at Century High School after school, with buses and dinner provided.
Tickets for the Instrumental Booster’s fourth annual crab feast raffle are on sale. The winning ticket will be drawn at the awards banquet on May 20.
The winner will receive certificates for two bushels of steamed crabs and gift certificates from a local grocery store. The seller of the winning ticket will also receive a bushel of steamed crabs and a case of sodas.

Local DestinationImagiNation winners
Local students scored top places in a recent state-level Destination ImagiNation competition at Towson State University. First and second place state-level winners head to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Global Finals next month.
Linganore High’s team placed first in the competition’s ‘‘On Safari” challenge: Laura Baker, Kevin Cole, Ashley Delauter, Melissa Dorrance, Emily Huebner, Christiana Martin and Katy McDonald.
Urbana High’s team of CJ Carey, Meaghan Holahan, Joselle McCracken and William Mohadjer placed second in the same competition.
Both head to Tennessee in May.
Other local teams at the state competition were third-place winners from New Market Middle, fourth-place winners from New Market Elementary, 11th-place winners from New Market Elementary, 13th-place winners from Windsor Knolls Middle, and 14th-place winners from Green Valley Elementary.
Destination ImagiNation is an annual worldwide, creative problem-solving competition. Judges determine winning teams by observing how well students use improvisational skills in instant challenge problems and how well teams have prepared for the long-term challenges they compete in.
16th Annual Art Exhibitionat Linganore High School
Linganore High School’s 16th Annual Art Exhibition will he held on May 16 in the new gym. The exhibition will feature hundreds of student artworks and will be open to the public from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The event is free and refreshments will be served.
A program begins at 7 p.m. and will include the third annual fashion show featuring designs created and worn by Linganore students. This will be followed by the induction of the new members of the Linganore High School chapter of the National Art Honor Society. These students have excelled in their artistic accomplishments while at Linganore High and include Angela Asabauch, Megan Batcheller, Tracy Belaski, Heather Blair, Laura Eburg Sarah Fry, Hannah Hughes, Kirsten Hustler, Alexandra Landau, Sarah Lilly, Courtney Lovetere, Sarah Mankowitz, Alexandria O’Brien, Emily Thompson, Stefanie Roberts, Stephanie Runion, Elizabeth Ruwet, Andromedia Sweeney, Tanya Tully, Jennifer Weigle, and Kelly Witte. These students join existing art society members Natalie Goodman, JoAnna Jenkins, Tina Maczis and Rachel Pincus.
Students who earned the Excellence in Art Award (a county-wide evaluation process in which professional artists judge student portfolios) will be recognized.

5K run
Spend Saturday exercising at a 5K run⁄walk held at Libertytown Park. Check-in and course orientation will be held at 8:30 a.m., with the run beginning at 9 a.m. Admission for students is $12 and for adults is $17.
