Bulldogs, Raiders capture track titles
Douglass junior victorious in three events at county championship meet
The Bowie High School boys' track and field team collected its third Prince George's County championship in coach Richard Andrulonis' 26 years, and its first since 1995 with Saturday's 11-point team victory at Wise High School. Meanwhile, Eleanor Roosevelt won the county girls' title. The Raiders earned 119 of 512 available points in the first leg of their Class 4A state title defense.
Frederick Douglass junior Gloria Roberts swept the girls' distance events, finishing first in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter races. Roosevelt junior Aurieyall Scott blew away the competition with a 23.52-second performance in the girls' 200 meters. She also won the triple jump (35 feet, 4.5 inches).
The Bowie boys were victorious in the 200 (Collin Manning 21.97), the 800 (Paul Edwards Jr. 1 minute, 57.20 seconds), and the 800 relay. Roosevelt senior Denny Long won the 100 (10.57), while Oxon Hill freshman Robert Mercer earned the county pole vault title by clearing 12 feet. Roosevelt senior Brian Faherty was the only individual multi-event winner on the boys' side, as he finished first the 1,600 and 3.200.
The county's track and field teams will return to action this coming week in their respective regional meets, as athletes try to qualify for the state championships.
