Harrison Elementary pupils to fill in for staffJames H. Harrison Elementary School sixth-graders participated in mock interviews April 27, applying for the positions of the school’s staff members. Later this month, the pupils who had the best mock interviews will shadow and assist the people in the positions they applied for. ‘‘In order to prepare our students for the job market, even though it may seem far away, we incorporated the mock interview with all the trimmings,” said guidance counselor Victor Butler. ‘‘The interviewers were most impressed at the knowledge that the students came with. They were in awe.” Pupils, dressed in business-casual clothing, met with their ‘‘interviewers” during the school’s annual career day. They were to have prepared resumes and knowledge of the position they were applying for. Interviewers assigned each pupil a score in categories including first impression, eye contact and overall confidence. Pupils could score up to 100 points. The pupils granted administrative and support jobs are Devin Latimer (principal); Stephen Ross (assistant principal); Aysia Wallace and Brittany Steven (guidance counselors); Manuel Lopez (custodian) and Kimberly Canales (nurse). Laurel High School senior wins social studies award Laurel High School senior Joiy Reid-Davis received the Prince George’s County Council for Social Studies’ Dana Kurfman Award on May 2. Reid-Davis, an honor roll student, was recognized for excellence in student leadership and academics. Laurel students named to Delaware Dean’s List Five students from Laurel were named to the University of Delaware’s Dean’s List for the Fall 2006 semester. The students are Kelly Fox Lemmey, a junior psychology major; Kheshia Renee Cashwell, a senior English major; Julia Ann Schemm, a sophomore finance major; Nikolett Eliz, a sophomore undeclared major and Sarah Kristin Peterson, a senior music education major. To be named to the Dean’s List students must be enrolled full-time, have a semester grade point average of 3.33 or above on a 4-point scale and have no temporary grades as of March 23 Laurel High School student receives leadership award Laurel High School student Ebony Harris was among the winners at a recent regional high school leadership awards ceremony. Harris was selected from more than 200 students who attended the 2006 College Summit Summer Workshop to receive the Peer Leadership Award. College Summit, a District-based, organized the summit and awards ceremony non-profit that guides students in low-income communities through the college application process. Harris, nominated by teachers and classmates, was recognized for assisting peers with college essays and financial aid applications. She plans to enroll this fall at Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla., where she will pursue a master’s of business administration. The First Annual College Summit Peer Leadership Awards, held in the District, was attended by more 200 students and 20 educators from 12 high schools in Prince George’s County, the District and Northern Virginia. Streetscape project begins along northbound Route 1 The State Highway Administration (SHA) last week was scheduled to begin work on a more than two-year streetscape project along northbound Route 1 in Laurel that will include road resurfacing, new pavement markings and traffic signs, reconstructed traffic signals and landscaping. The work area is between westbound Route 198, also known as Talbot Avenue, and the Howard County line. Weather permitting, the $2.2 million project will be finished fall 2009, SHA said. Warning signs will be posted prior to any closures. Single-lane closures are possible 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Other scheduled improvements include installation of pedestrian crossing countdown signals at Main Street and curb and gutter upgrades to improve drainage. Anne Arundel County launches logo contest Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold (R) is calling on county citizens, students and employees to come up with a new county recruitment logo. The logo design contest is open to county citizens, students enrolled at a middle school, high school or colleges located in the county and county government employees. Artists of all skill levels are welcome to participate, including professional artists. Guidelines include: ‘‘Unified recruitment logo” entries should promote the benefits of living and working in Anne Arundel County and will judged on overall appearance, simplicity, clarity of message and originality. Logos should be able be effectively reproduced in black and white as well as color and in a variety of formats and sizes. Entry forms and designs must be received by 5 p.m. May 31.
