Wise, Flowers lead way in county track championships
Pumas, Jaguars in close battles as county meet enters final day of competition Saturday
The Henry A. Wise High boys and Charles H. Flowers High girls have the lead entering the second half of the county track & field championships on Saturday.
The second day of the two-day event is slated to get underway at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wise High in Upper Marlboro. Wise is in first place in the boys' team standings with 41 points, while Flowers sits atop the girls' standings with 24 points.
Bowie (35), Flowers (34) and Eleanor Roosevelt (28) were second, third and fourth, respectively in the team standings on the boys' side.
On the girls' side, Eleanor Roosevelt (20) was second in the team standings, while Parkdale and Oxon Hill stood tied with 14 points each.
Eleanor Roosevelt senior Brian Faherty claimed the title in the boys' 3,200-meter run with a time of 9 minutes, 59.3 seconds, followed by Gwynn Park sophomore Daniel Richards (10:37.9) and Wise junior Adrian Miller (10:56.3).
Dwayne Powell of Flowers won the long jump (22 feet, 1.50 inches), followed by his Jaguar teammate Jamal Jarmon (20-1.50) and Bryant Nwosu (19-9.25).
Jarmon took the high jump crown, as he cleared 5-10 in fewer attempts than Wise junior Titus Till. Potomac sophomore Antonio Jenkins was third (5-8).
Wise junior Jeff Butler won the boys' shot put (48-3), followed by Bowie's Okoya Bozeman (44-1) and Largo's Adewale Ogunsanya (43-2).
Bowie won the boys' 800 relay (1:29.9) followed by Roosevelt (1:30.2) and Flowers (1:30.4). The Bulldogs also won the 3,200 relay (8:18.0) followed by Roosevelt (8:20.0) and Wise (8:33.0).
On the girls' side, Douglass junior Gloria Roberts won the 3,200 (11:25.4), followed by Parkdale's Elizabeth Carino (12:40.9) and Flowers' T'Nay Williams (12:53.1).
Roosevelt junior Aurieyall Scott won the girls' triple jump (35-4), with Oxon Hill junior Taylor Butler (35-1.5) and Oxon Hill senior Shaleathia Barnes (32-8) taking second and third.
The Roosevelt girls' 800 relay established a new meet record time of 1:39.8, eclipsing the mark of 1:39.9 set in 2001 by Roosevelt. Flowers (1:42.3) and Bowie (1:43.0) finished second and third.
Flowers (10:08) won the girls' 3,200 relay followed by Largo (10:17) and Parkdale (11 minutes).
Preliminary and semifinals were held in the boys' and girls' 100 and 200.
On the boys' side, Denny Long (Roosevelt), Trey Massey (Frederick Douglass), Ronald Darby (Potomac), Kwinton Pierce (DuVal), Emmanuel Noumossie (Bowie), Alex Blackwell (Wise), Michael Stennett (Flowers) and L'Zerek Chapman (Laurel) qualified for Saturday's 100-meter final.
In the boys' 200, Ben McKenzie (Largo), Collin Manning (Bowie), Tristan Youngblood (Roosevelt), Andrew Boseman (Gwynn Park), Daniel Rich (Wise), Noumossie, Pierce and Blackwell qualified for the final.
Saturday's girls' 100 final will include Cearha Miller (Oxon Hill), Corryn Hurrington (Flowers), Indya Price (Friendly), Abi Adenikinju (Roosevelt), Sherreka Jackson (Flowers), Jasmin Phillips (Roosevelt), Shanel Deal (Oxon Hill) and Whitney Ikpeze (Bladensburg).
The girls' 200 final will feature Asha Ruth (Bowie), Ekundayo Sogbesan (Forestville), Krystal Simpson (Gwynn Park), Deborah Adelola (Bladensburg), Andrea Fields (Surrattsville), Scott, Miller and Price.
In the girls' 100 hurdles Jenea McCammon (Roosevelt), Cassaundra Bouldin (Bowie), Seneman Burns (Friendly), Shantae Boney (Largo), Vernetta Biggs (Friendly), Joanne Pittman (Flowers), Adrienne Tolson (Bowie) and Butler (Oxon Hill) advanced to Saturday's finals.
Saturday's schedule includes the finals of the boys' and girls' 100 and 200, preliminaries and finals in the boys' and girls' 400, 800, 400 relay, 1,600 relay, 300 hurdles and 110 hurdles. Field events will include the boys' triple jump and discus and the girls' long jump, high jump, shot put and discus.
