Templeton Knolls hosts health and community fair
A spring health and community fair in Templeton Knolls will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 16 and will include information on mental health, domestic abuse, HIV and AIDS, alcohol, safety, fitness, legal aid and housing.
The event at Templeton Elementary School, located at 6001 Carters Lane in Riverdale, will also have door prizes, a bake and food sale and a yard sale. Experts from the Prince George's County Health Department, New Image Fitness and the Prince George's County Sheriff's Department will be on hand. Hyattsville resident's son enlists in National Guard
Kevin J. McMillan, son of Hyattsville resident Johanna O. McMillan, enlisted in the Maryland Army National Guard.
The National Guard is a reserve component of the U.S. Army. McMillan is an interior electrician and assigned to Detachment 1, 244th Engineer Company which is based in Catonsville.

Arts Festival
The second annual Downtown Hyattsville Arts Festival is from noon to 5 p.m. May 16 along Route 1 and Longfellow Street.
Last year's event drew more than 1,110 attendees and this year will have 40 local visual and performing artists and craft and jewelry vendors along downtown streets. Busboys and Poets and Franklin's Restaurant and Brewery will be serving food and Ben and Jerry's will be serving ice cream.
The event will also feature musicians, dancers and street performers. ArtDC.org will provide art activities in the Lustine Center at 5710 Baltimore Ave.
Attendees can tour the Gateway Arts District Open Studio Tour and Mount Rainier Day with the free Gateway Shuttle Bus, departing from the West Hyattsville Metro Station.

Hyattsville Middle School students win contest
Students at Hyattsville Middle School were selected as winners in various categories in the countywide Write-A-Book contest.
Winning eighth-graders are Niko Schultz, who won first place for illustrated fiction; Kierra Kyle, who won first place for poetry; Anne Doyle, who won second place for illustrated fiction; and Miriam Schiebel, who won second place for drama.
Winning seventh-graders are Cristeen Anyanwu, who won second place for short story and Mariam Coker and Nour Debiat, who took second place for a group short story.
Bladensburg Elementary students win art contest
Bladensburg Elementary School students Kierra Gaines and Janeil Raymond were selected as winners in the Youth Art Month Exhibit at the University Town Center in Hyattsville. As part of the recognition, the students are invited to a journal and bookmarking workshop at Bowie High School this month.

UM hosts college Q-and-A
for children, families
The University System of Maryland, which represents 11 of the state's public universities, will host an information session for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders interested in college on May 16 in College Park.
The event is part of the system's Way2GoMaryland campaign that encourages students and parents to prepare for college early. Students and parents will be able to talk to current university students, admissions officials and financial aid experts.
They will also have a chance to meet University System of Maryland Chancellor William Kirwan and Prince George's County Public Schools Superintendent William Hite, Jr. Participants will also be eligible for gift packs and door prizes.

County offering pet rabies vaccinations throughout May
The Prince George's County Health Department is asking county residents to make sure their pets are updated on rabies vaccinations.
State law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets older than four months of age be kept current on their vaccinations.
The county will hold vaccination clinics for dogs, cats and ferrets this May. Vaccinations will cost $5.
Residents can also keep their pets and families safe by keeping pets in the home, yard or on a leash at all times, avoiding contact with unfamiliar animals and keeping trash cans closed.
Clinics will be held Saturday in Greenbelt, May 16 in Temple Hills and May 23 in Bowie. All clinics will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Musical performances to be held at Roosevelt High
The free All Orchestras Concert involving the Roosevelt Strings, Concert Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the Eleanor Roosevelt High School Auditorium, 7601 Hanover Parkway in Greenbelt. Students in the orchestra program are from all over the northern Prince George's county, and the concert will be directed by David Yarbrough.
Also coming to the school is the All Bands Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The concert features Concert Bands I & II, the Symphonic Band, the Wind Ensemble and as a special biannual feature, the Alumni Band composed of ERHS graduates. The All Bands Concert is under the direction of Sally Wagner. As with the All Orchestras Concert, students in the band program are from all over the northern Prince George's county. More than 550 talented Maryland middle and high students competed at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, on April 25 for Maryland History Day prizes and the honor of representing Maryland at National History Day.
Katja Harper and Danikquia Starks placed second in Senior Group Exhibits for the project "Muhammad Yunus: Revolutionary Against Poverty."
Jake Fletcher received the Special Prize in Social History, Senior Division, sponsored by Maryland State Society, Colonial Dames XVII Century, for the research paper "Robert Gould Shaw: Paving the Way for African American Soldiers."
David Phelps received The Barry A. Lanman Award for Oral History, Martha Ross Center for Oral History, UMBC, Senior Division, sponsored by John D. Willard V, for the research paper "George C. Marshall: Champion of Europe."
All are Eleanor Roosevelt High School students.
The students who qualified for Maryland History Day competition were selected from over 16,000 Maryland students. This year's theme was "The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies."
Winners from five different categories — research papers, museum-type exhibits, performances, Web sites and multimedia documentaries — will represent Maryland at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest on June 14-18 at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Mother's Day concert

Musician Bill Jenkins of Mount Rainier will give a free concert Sunday at the Old Parish House in College Park.
Jenkins, who plays a variety of instruments and encourages audience participation, will perform from 3 to 4 p.m. A light reception will follow.

Greenbelt Climate Action Network Presentation
The Greenbelt Climate Action Network is presenting "What Does Food Have To Do With Climate Change?" at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Plant Physiologist Martha Tomecek and soil scientist Michel Cavigelli, a husband-and-wife team from Greenbelt, will share their work as scientists, which include studying the effects of elevated CO2 on plants and soil and the challenge of growing our own food locally.
After the presentation, representatives from various local organizations will speak on their involvement with the issue of sustainable food. The organizations include Greenbelt Farmers Market, Greenbelt CSA (Calvert Farms), Thoughts on Food, Menu for the Future, Master Gardeners "Grow It – Eat it" Program, Greenbelt Community Gardens, Cheseapeake Education, Arts and Research Society program, Green Vegan Networking and Food & Water Watch.
The evening is co-sponsored by Greenbelt Climate Action Network, Simplicity Matters Earth Institute and CHEARS.
