UM student dies while jogging on trail in Berwyn Heights
Investigators still trying to determine what triggered heart attack near Lake Artemesia
A 20-year-old student at the University of Maryland, College Park, collapsed and died Friday while jogging near campus, Prince George's County officials said.
Christian Federico, a sophomore from Ossining, N.Y., collapsed and went into cardiac arrest Friday afternoon on a trail near Lake Artemesia between College Park and Berwyn Heights, said Prince George's Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady.
A witness on the trail called 911 at about 4:45 p.m., Brady said, and a doctor who happened to be nearby performed CPR. Federico was then taken by paramedics to Doctors Community Hospital in Lanham, where he was pronounced dead later that night, Brady said.
"There were quite a few people using the track," Brady said. "A sudden death occurred ... despite the best efforts of everybody involved."
Federico was in his first semester at UM, where he was studying kinesiology and was a member of the school's club baseball team. He transferred in from Westchester Community College in Valhalla, N.Y., last January.
Brady said an autopsy was performed Monday on Federico to determine what caused the heart attack, but results were unknown as of Tuesday morning. He said the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, which operates Lake Artemesia, will investigate the death.
