Northwest High graduate Arnold Davies plays in Saturday’s Red-White game for the University of Maryland football team. Davies, a 6-foot, 195-pound junior, transferred to Maryland from Delaware State last fall and is vying for playing time at cornerback.
Watkins Mill High graduate and current Maryland defensive back Drew Robinson takes a simple approach every time he steps on the football field: ‘‘Every play I get, I want to make the most of it. I’d rather have quality than quantity.”

That mentality served the junior walk-on well as he made the most of his time during Saturday’s annual Red-White game that concluded the Maryland football program’s spring practice session.

Three particular plays stood out for Robinson — a near interception in the end zone on a pass from quarterback Jordan Steffy to LaQuan Williams, a wicked hit on Good Counsel graduate and current Maryland tight end Tommy Galt, and a bone-crunching shot on tailback Morgan Green.

The near interception came in the fourth quarter as Robinson, who transferred last fall from Bowie State, timed his leap perfectly but as he and Williams landed in the end zone, Williams was able to take the ball away for the score.

‘‘I played my technique perfectly,” Robinson said. ‘‘I heard a ball call from the sideline. The way the rules go, if two people have possession in the end zone, they give it to the offense. That’s pretty much what happened.

‘‘I think maybe one more snag on the ball and I would have had the interception. I’m disappointed about that.”

The 5-foot-10, 197-pound Robinson didn’t miss on the hits against Galt and Green, who appeared to have suffered a broken collarbone on the blow. Green was one of the team’s most prolific runners this spring and had gained 93 yards on 19 carries before the injury.

‘‘I hit Tommy Galt and then about four plays later, they told me I broke Morgan Green’s collarbone,” Robinson said. ‘‘I’d rather everybody be healthy during the spring but at the same time, it was either him or me. I’m glad I put a good hit on him but I don’t want to see my teammate hurt.”

Robinson’s inspired play stems from two things — he wants the make the most of his opportunity after walking away from a sure spot on the Bowie State football team and the knowledge of what his position on the team currently is.

‘‘It’s been a dream come true,” he said. ‘‘Coach [Ralph] Friedgen and [strength and conditioning] coach Dwight Galt, those were the head honchos who accepted me. They only take a few walk-ons. Out of 100-plus guys, they only took seven walk-ons last fall and I was one of those guys so I just want to thank them for giving me the opportunity to play.”

Robinson was listed third on the depth chart at one cornerback spot behind Anthony Wiseman and Nolan Carroll but that could be a little deceiving with veterans Isaiah Gardner and Richard Taylor on the mend.

‘‘I’m not in a position where I could have a bad day today because I’m a walk-on. But I honestly felt like I had a good day today,” he said. ‘‘Right now, I’m all on special teams and I’m rotating in at corner. My goal is to get more repetitions at corner but pretty much, wherever I play, I want to make the best of that one play.”

Also vying for a top spot in the secondary is Northwest graduate Arnold Davis, who, like Robinson, transferred in this past fall after playing a year at Delaware State.

‘‘I wanted to come home really,” said Davies on the transfer. ‘‘Delaware State is a good program. I had fun out there. There was strong competition. We had a new coach. Everybody was behind him. I just felt like I wanted to come back home. It was too far for me.”

Davies (6-0, 195), a junior, has made the most of his opportunities as well, earning a spot on all the special teams, while also challenging for a starting spot.

‘‘My goal for next year is to be a key contributor on special teams and hopefully win one of these starting cornerback spots,” he said. ‘‘I’m No. 3 right now. I just came in. I’ve got to learn the system. I’m going to learn over the summer, train and just come back in fall and make some noise.”
