May is National Bike Month
Coordinated by the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike Month will be celebrated with various activities around the nation, including Bike-to-Work Week May 11-15 and Bike-to-Work Day on May 15. The positive consequences of biking, according to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (www.bicyclinginfo.org), include a healthier environment and healthier community members. A transportation system conducive to bicycling can reduce traffic congestion and improve quality of life, reduce health care costs and reduce dependency on auto ownership and resulting insurance and maintenance costs. Bikeable communities create a more equitable society, with options for residents at all income levels, the center states on its Web site.
