Second career a winner for Rockville teacher
Karen Buglass started her career as a city planner and demographer, but the first Take Our Daughters to Work Day in 1993 started her in a whole new direction.
"I read about it and suggested to my boss that we do it," Buglass said. "I was told, OK, and by the way, why don't you run it?'"
Buglass said she invited women at her workplace to come up with projects. She was so impressed with the work and fun of interacting with the children that she decided teaching was what she really wanted to do.
This week, Buglass, a fourth-grade teacher at Green Acres School in Rockville, was named the recipient of the 2010-2011 Shirley J. Lowrie "Thank You for Teaching" Award.
The award is given by the Independent Education and the Community Foundation of Montgomery County.
"[The award] acknowledges the joy I experience and the difference I make in teaching," Buglass said.
