Convention trip probed after student found with school board in San FranciscoThe Prince George’s County school system has launched an internal investigation into why a local student ended up at a recent education conference with school board members in San Francisco without the knowledge or consent of his parents. Schools spokesman John White confirmed the investigation is underway, but would not identify who was involved in the incident or describe the details of the investigation. However, two sources familiar with the investigation said at-large school board member Nathaniel B. Thomas was under scrutiny for traveling to the conference with an 18-year-old student. When asked about the investigation, Thomas told The Gazette, ‘‘I haven’t been informed of anything ... you can speak to John White about it.” White said the school system found out about the incident when the student’s parents called the school board offices asking where their son was, after the Prince George’s officials left for San Francisco. ‘‘The minute we were informed the student was on the trip, [schools Superintendent] Dr. [John] Deasy took action to make sure the student was taken back to his parents,” White said. ‘‘We’re going to have an investigation ... but I don’t know the details yet.” The school board was attending the 67th annual National School Board Association (NSBA) conference in San Francisco, where school board members from across the country gathered for workshops and presentations April 14-17. Meanwhile, two school board committee meetings scheduled for Monday evening were abruptly canceled on Friday. White would not confirm whether the cancellation was related to the investigation. Thomas, a graduate of Suitland High School, was involved in numerous community associations and churches, including Reid Temple AME Church and the Suitland Citizens Association, before getting elected to an at-large seat on the school board in November.
